President tweeted Veto! out of nowhere.
He had never threatened to veto this bill before.
His reasons made no sense - he wants to end DACA, not save it.
The White House ignored him.
After two hours he changed his mind again.
Obvious explanation: he tweeted Veto to distract the media from Rosensteins press conference. When it was clear it was Iran hacking indictments, he withdrew his distraction.
And the media fell for it. They completely ignored Rosensteins indictments while giving Veto! Top billing.
Good news is that Mueller watched this. He knows not to preannounce anything, especially now, and he knows to drip news out slowly to prevent the president from derailing media coverage of single bombshells.

(6,916 posts)He tweeted just BEFORE the announcement. Then after he knew what the indictments were, he dropped the Vito and signed the bill.

(6,916 posts)Trumps tweets are strategic. I analyzed the tweets on NPRs On the Media, and a diagram has been shared widely on social media and also appeared in the Washington Post.
The media is still focused on the false accusation, not on the investigation of Trumps Russian connections and the treason issue. (Of course, the growing nature of the scandal is making it harder and harder for Trump to pivot away from his Russia problem)
Pretty effective tweet. But it gets more effective.
And worse: This is not just a diversion from the treason issue. Its also a diversion from what Trumps cabinet, with the help of Paul Ryan, is doing under the cover of the diversion: denying healthcare to millions, taking away public protections we have all depended on by defunding the EPA, allowing drugs to go on the market without being tested for safety and efficacy, taking away protections from investors, and on and on.
The wiretap tweet was not crazy or manic it was strategic. And when the press treats tweets as breaking news it just plays out the Trump strategy.
