Is the latest culture war question designed to get rabid republicans motivated to back their party.
We've seen this Bullshit before...
Gay marriage and transgender bathrooms come to mind.
Democrats need to counter with careful messaging in order not to lose this issue also.

(26,743 posts)The Obama administration replaced it with a much smaller (but more frequently run) statistical sampling.

(1,294 posts)continual intervals. Then have it on the more frequent sampling. I don't mind the question being asked to statistically extrapolate, but it shouldn't be on the main form that goes out to so many.

(5,937 posts)Does that mean it should be on the census, I don't know, but it's data that is being collected in other ways. It does have specific purposes in regard to SNAP and Medicaid eligibility but I don't think the question will be that alarming for some people already familiar with this intrusion. I would just choose not to answer it, if it were a census question. I don't fill those out anyway so.

(54,013 posts)The question is there specifically intending to suppress response rates in Latino communities. This is an attempt to take Congressional votes away from California, urban Colorado, and southern Texas.
Puzzledtraveller
(5,937 posts)because unlike the SNAP and Medicaid applications I do, citizenship is irrelevant to the census. But I won't be surprised to see federal programs thrown out as examples why the republicans think it's no big deal, in case they have not brought up these programs already.

(54,013 posts)Many federally funded programs, not just in Block Grants, are often based on census data. So this would also have the effect of underfunding a number of social service programs in Latino communities
As usual, when the Republicans play politics, innocent Working Class People end up getting hurt.

(33,643 posts)all kinds of stuff like representation. They'll become 0/0's of a 'person' in certain calculations (when convenient for the GOP of course). They'll do this of course AFTER teh census is taken and people already answered.
Another reason we need to make sure they're OUT in 2018 from Congress, and OUT from Executive in 2020.

(90,705 posts)Perhaps soon some bright GOPer will propose a compromise -- say, counting non-citizens as 3/5 of a person?
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Perhaps 0/0's of a person in fact ...

(33,643 posts)Also there's numerous other 'legally here but not actually citizens' statuses people can have as well. So this is NOT just 'counting illegals'.

(3,622 posts)Without an accurate count one can't realistically allocate federal funds to a population.
For example...
If Texas has a real population of 25 Million, they should receive an allotment of funds for that population.
If only 20 Million are counted, and funds are not distributed for the 5 Million not counted, the burden is increased on the 20.
