First one was according to my caller ID, from the Sheboygan city government.
Just now I got a second one, from "Wells Fargo Bank."
Both were from the same company, trying to sell me one of these "Life Alert" gadgets.
I tried to get past the robocall to find out who the company is.
No luck.

(46,758 posts)We have a number in Florida to call. We are on the Do Not Call List, but they call anyway. Form is very easy to fill out.

(7,434 posts)That's why I have voice mail. If the call is important and it's from someone I know, they'll leave voice mail. Otherwise, it's a waste of my time.

(8,929 posts)so they can't wake me up either.
So they can call as much as they want and they totally don't bother me.

(12,634 posts)answering machine, and all the phone ring volumes turned way down. Callers are instructed to announce their names. If they do, I pick up. If they don',t and hang up, as trash callers generally do, I'm hardly aware of them. Never had caller ID and see no benefit to it.

(102,378 posts)That is apparently, a "thing" using proxies.
The other thing to be very worried about is those proxies that hide an overseas number and that, if you answer, charges you big bucks.
Robocalls used to be just annoying. Now, they may be seriously problematic, costly, or dangerous.

(5,301 posts)of numbers with my area code and prefix, too make me think it's s neighbor. They might work if it happened on my landline, as I moved to a small town in Oregon, but the cellphone is the same number is had from back when I lived in Los Angeles.
My phone company has a free feature that, when enabled, requires the caller to press 1, or stay on the line for x seconds in order to be put through.

(9,275 posts)You can report the # as scam. That was anyone else who looks up the # will know.

(28,945 posts)That might help. If they're established scam or spam, they're often tagged and noted on scam alert sites.

(16,186 posts)I got one the other day to lower the interest on my credit cards. After 5 minutes of changing voices and telling the person I had 48K of cc debt, I told them my guardian would now be taking over the conversation. For some reason they hung up on me.

(2,050 posts)With a blocking function, hit two buttons and they're gone for good, if the call it rings once and shows " Blocked Caller".
It was getting so bad the last two years I'd get maybe one in ten calls that weren't garbage.
Ain't technology great?

(23,337 posts)because the only calls we got were either from my mother in law or scammers. Now the scammers call our cell phones. Its always the same garbage...the fake IRS, Microsoft or weve won $100 gift card that theyll send as soon as we give them our credit card # for shipping and handling. My 12 year old is a master at wasting scammer time...he had one of them going for at least 30 minutes. He told the scammer his name was Hugh Janus and the guy didnt catch on. Now we are getting postcards at our business addressed to a Mr. Hugh Janus notifying him that its his last chance to collect his $100 gift card and to please call right away. Kids...

(32,094 posts)If so, and your carrier is AT&T, they now have a new function that will notify you on your caller ID if are potential scammers and spammers. You can also block calls. It works fairly well. I somehow got on some right-wing call lists. I have already blocked the Save the Fetus Brigade, and will be adding the "Balanced Budget" kooks shortly. I googled that number, and apparently Twit Romney is behind it.

(62,448 posts)I can't do the door knocking anymore and did my part with the phone.
I doubt we will be able to do much calling this year since I believe most folks have gotten the message not to answer callers you don't know.
