Tariffs and trade wars will hurt more Americans economically than they will help. Thousands of jobs are dependent on global trade. Tariffs will only benefit a small number of Americans, if that. There are approx. 75,000 steel workers in America, but there are thousands of jobs in the auto industry, construction, etc. that depend on affordable steel.

(11,804 posts)That said global trade agreements have created some real problems - particularly when it comes to labor rights and the power of these trade agreements to mandate laissez-faire capitalism in parts of the world where that won't be beneficial. While I don't want to do this under the current administration, I do think we should evaluate these agreements with an eye towards global justice at some point.

(3,433 posts)trade deficits with countries like China. We can still do things to stick up for our workers. What we need to do, is to get China to negotiate. They are not going to do that if we do nothing because they are already in a advantageous position. Trump's approach may to too blunt, raising tariffs too much at one time. It is disheartening to me, on the fact that so many people are falling for the corporate meme on this. The global race to the bottom on wages, has facilitated the world wide income disparity.
