I apologize. I saw this exchange just as we were sitting down to dinner. This was, truly, a hit and run post. Looks like lots of others saw it too and shared the important parts in the comments below.

Again, mea culpa.

Hewitt wanted to argue that there was nothing wrong with it as the ethics office said, then attacked Painter for not respecting the ethics office pronouncement. Painter was having none of it and really went off when Hewitt made some crack about how people in MN couldn’t understand how things were done in DC (wish I could remember this more clearly).

Location, location, location...

And, how long was your lease? A year? DC area landlords charge a huge premium (sometimes 20-50%) if you commit to less than a year, or are on month to month, etc., like Pruitt’s. I had a $2500 per month lease on a 2 BR in a less central area than CH and if I wanted to extend it month to month, it was to go up to $4200 in 2016.

that you only had to pay for the nights you stayed in your apartment? Because that's the deal Pruitt had. It's corruption, pure and simple. And it's not just the apartment. It's about a trip he took to Morocco to try and push liquified natural gas:

That trip cost $40,000 because Pruitt and his top aides all flew first class. But here’s an obvious question: Why was he even there? That isn’t his job. The EPA’s job is not to sell other countries on buying American products, that’s why we have the Department of Commerce. That’s Rick Perry’s job as the Secretary of Commerce. Pruitt’s job is to make sure that the capture and production of LNG and other forms of energy is done in a way that is safe for the environment and public health. So why did Pruitt take that trip at all? This may be the answer:
Read more at http://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2018/03/30/today-in-corruption-pruitt-takes-trip-to-morocco-to-do-perrys-job/#dIE1TILLyAjmbZCS.99

And who owns a company that sells liquified natural gas? THE OWNER OF THE APARTMENT OF GAVE HIM THE SWEETHEART DEAL. You'll only look foolish trying to defend this disgusting piece of crap as there is NOTHING UNFAIR about the heat he's getting.

..and Richard was a little pissed.

He said that for Pruitt to rent a room from a lobbyist for $50 per night was an obvious ethics violation. Hewitt said Pruitt was a long-time friend of his and that he could have stayed with him for no money but rules forbid it.

Then Richard went into a righteous rant about "fly-over" country like Minnesota and that the people were going to throw out the entire corrupt bunch. Hewitt nervously laughed.

that neither of them countered, in that the ethics chief of the EPA signed off on this apt $50 rental.
Yes he did, but before he found out the daughter lived there too and it was basically the whole apartment and I think's it's under review again now.

Hugh repeated this important fake point 6 times and neither the host or Painter corrected him.

They only focused on the $50 price of a room and what do you pay for rooms and Hugh wasn't falling for that one.

They corrected his lie about staying with Friends, when it's lobbyists you can't stay with, but Hugh got em on the point that "the ethics chief approved it"

That's the only talking point the GOP cares about with this scandal right now.
You can tell because he said it 6 times.

action and Hewitt unsuccessfully tried to attack him for it.

To me, all the EO’s action did is raise a question about how inept and/or corrupt employees in that office are.
