(28,151 posts)I have bought some books from indie sellers on there but I'm not into supporting their very shitty treatment of warehouse employees.

(18 posts)Amazon is convenient AF and if you have prime it saves you lots of money and time, BUT they are like Walmart on steroids (or Viagra I guess) when it comes to wiping out local businesses. SO, now it looks like tRump and I might share a common view. I don't know what to do about that.

(108,023 posts)I've used them to buy specialty items for work that are often hard to find in local stores.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)I avoided Amazon for a few years, but after spending a few Saturdays driving all over the city to find specialty and little used items, I gave in and tried Amazon, the selection was amazing, have used them eversince.
One thing that people don't realize is that local shops can sell through Amazon and have success at it, if their supply line is sound and their pricing is competitive (for me, it does not have to be the lowest price, if I like how their product is presented and if the details on the product answers all of my questions, I will pay more for the product).

(28,798 posts)and buy all kinda stuff off of there. shop with my hands.

(6,262 posts)Harder and harder for me to get out and about each year, especially in winter weather.
Use it a lot for gifts. They can be gift wrapped and sent for about the same price as it would cost to ship.
In an area where I would have to drive 20 plus miles to get to a store that MIGHT have what I need. Then it would be a big box store, causing me a lot of parking ground to limp over and then navigate the cavern to find the item, if there.
Still frequent the nearby grocery, Walgreens, Ace Hardware, and pet store. Otherwise, it is Amazon and catalogs.
Absolutely love it, even if Bezos is the son of Satan as some would say.

(4,492 posts)I use it all the time, but I haven't bought any physical items from them lately (will buy a case when I upgrade my phone).
But Prime offers streaming video, music, and one free ebook a month. I take advantage of these services.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Amazon has become the largest bookseller in the world. I write on the side, can you do a wannabe writer a favor? When you read an ebook, leave a review if you liked the book. I have read books by new writers on Amazon that were good, but most people that read them didn't write a review, I can see that for a book that stinks, but some of the work was really good. If capable new writers don't get their stuff reviewed, they get muscled aside by well known writers and celebrities and politicians that are increasingly using Amazon as their sales channel.
crazycatlady
(4,492 posts)I'll admit I'm bad at them for other things though. Unless the product's terrible (I left a bad review on a phone case that cracked).

(41,986 posts)I cant believe how hard it is to get people who LOVED a book to put up a review!

(16,375 posts)With Prime it's all essentially free. And I can watch Netflix with it too.

(8,924 posts)About the same you'd pay for most streaming video memberships, plus the advantage of the two day free shipping on the stuff I buy. I've used it often enough that its a good value.

(5,325 posts)I did some shopping on Amazon but then my boss talked me into trying Prime and I've never looked back. Apart from the fact that the prices often beat anything local, not having to run around to find things and then lug them home and get them up to my condo is really major for me. Between Prime and ebay, I do little brick/mortar shopping anymore.

(43,890 posts)AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice.

(13,521 posts)rheumatoid arthritis and Amazon has helped me out a lot (as well as Etsy) with shopping, particularly during Christmas. I just cant get out and walk for long periods of time anymore. I also am able to find things that I cant find locally.

(5,325 posts).......my Discover card pays 5% cash back on Amazon purchases in the 3rd quarter when I have all that extra shopping to do. Every little bit helps.

(15,512 posts)That gives you faster delivery times and lots of free digital stuff if you use any. Sign up for monthly billing if you think you might drop after the free month or you'll get stuck with a year's billing if you forget to cancel. Which they'll refund but still it's less hassle.

(65,174 posts)Just not enough to justify a Prime subscription. It has its problems (not so great working conditions in their factories, tax evasion, and a company that big must be watched/regulated), but it is convenient.
I would use it for popcorn, but their price on the kind I like is ridiculous.

(9,446 posts)And I have noticed that eBay sellers are actually buying what you order on Amazon and having it shipped straight from Amazon...after marking the price up of course.
