Some people try to rationalize that a 500 point drop is not as dire as it used to be because the index is so high now that 500 points is not terrible percentage wise.

While this is indeed true, the market is steadily creeping downward. This slow overall descent causes a 500 point drop to become more meaningful, percentage wise.
