“… I wanted to tell you first what magnificent students you have, and how like many I am inspired by their determination and commitment to making the world a better and safer place,” Chaiken wrote in the letter. “These young people will be our leaders within my lifetime and I am exceedingly encouraged to see their activism and their vision for a better country.”

Chaiken shared the letter with the Sun-News on Tuesday. It was emailed to Marjory Stoneman Principal Ty Thompson, Guidance Director Terrence Sullivan and 12th grade counselor Gerald Turmaine.

“The faculty and staff at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas have obviously done a wonderful job of educating these articulate, thoughtful, and kind young people,” the letter stated.

She also wrote that Hogg, Gonzalez and their classmates would be welcomed at NMSU.

“Please tell David, Emma, and any other of your student leaders, that they are welcome at the William Conroy Honors College and at New Mexico State University,” the letter stated. “If they would like to learn more I would be delighted to talk with them on the phone, I can assure them that they will be admitted to our university, and I will personally make it my commitment to raise as much funding as I can to support them with scholarships.”
