(1,201 posts)But hey; like Al Capone going to jail for not paying his taxes, I will take Erik Prince going to jail for anything they can nail him on.

(10,437 posts)not covered under perjury of lying to federal investigators....Now if Prince made same statements to Mueller's team , then we have a "Martha Steward" moment and the guy will serve prison time....and hopefully not be able to have future govt contracts as a convicted felon.

(26,060 posts)you can go to jail for lying to congress even if you're not under oath
https://www.cnn.com/2017/07/24/politics/penalty-for-lying-to-congress/index.html
Federal law makes it a crime to "knowingly and willfully" give "materially" false statements to Congress, even if unsworn -- which is not to be confused with the more general crime of perjury for lying under oath.
The consequences for either crime are serious: one can face up to five years in prison.
Like many criminal statutes, however, proving a witness "knowingly" sought to mislead sets a high bar for prosecution -- meaning the omission can't be merely a mistake or accident. And the "materiality" requirement means the false statement has to actually matter -- i.e., a tendency to influence the listener.
While it is rare to see charges filed for lying to Congress, there is precedent.
John M. Poindexter, President Ronald Reagan's national security adviser, was sentenced to prison for lying to Congress about key details of the Iran-Contra affair.

(26,060 posts)saying before - your claim was it wasn't a crime. I was merely pointing out that yes, it is.

(4,544 posts)there's a more complete article (their source) where you'll find this: "'I didn't fly there to meet any Russian guy,' Prince told the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in November." So, yeah, no perjury charges. Sadly.

There was a suggestion a couple of years ago that he and his mercenaries should take over for American troops in either Syria or Afghanistan and that he could do the job for billions less.
I think he has been in Trump Org for quite some time, even before his meeting in the Seychelles.
He is a much larger player in the financial part of this Russian scandal, in my opinion.

(15,286 posts)I'm sure Prince told the same lie to Mueller's team. The precedent has already been set with others charged with and pleading guilty to lying to the FBI/Mueller. VanDerZwann gets to spend a month in jail for doing it, got fired from his law firm and the felony conviction will cost him his law license.
Prince will end up pleading guilty or be convicted of the same charge. That felony conviction means Prince will have to surrender all his precious guns and his business will likely be barred from getting anymore DoD or other gov't business.
