Historian John Meacham Predicts End Of Trump Presidency

The discussion on Morning Joe this morning what not only that Donald Trump is a liar, but he is now surrounding himself with liars.

I found what John Meacham said to be true, but not comforting:

JOHN MEACHAM: Do you remember the -- I guess maybe the day after the inauguration when the new president went out to the George H.W. Bush Intelligence Center? (Joe Scarborough: Good lord.)

You know the quotation on the wall out there which is in the Gospel of John: "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." You know, not to be overly grand at this hour of the day, but there's an enormous amount of salience to that. Presidents historically get in trouble when they think they can put one past the broad populous. If you -- President Trump, Johnson in Vietnam. President Nixon in nearly everything. And there was a great test proposed during World War II by Churchill about how the British people or the American people could react to a crisis, could undertake great public sacrifice, but they only did it if they were told the truth and he proposed a two-prong test. He said that the British people can face any misfortune with buoyancy as long as they're convinced that those in charge of their affairs are not deceiving them, which is to say lying to the public, or themselves dwelling in a fool's paradise. Put another way, they're out of touch with reality themselves. It seems to me right now the president probably fails both tests. This may take another couple of years. It took us four years of Joe McCarthy. It took six and more years with Vietnam, but the truth ultimate ultimately will out here and I think honestly that both the president and those who lie and misrepresent and enable him on his behalf are on the wrong side of history here.

1. I want to see the Trump presidency end with the 2020 election.

I want the Democrats to take at least 1 house of Congress with the midterm elections which will put a check on Trump's actions. Let his mouth and the investigations continue to hurt and weaken him. If Trump is convinced that he will not win reelection then he will simply declare his presidency to be the most beautiful and successful one in history and retire since he will say there is a huge conspiracy against him. Pence will have a problem running since he has linked himself so closely to Trump but we are in between a rock and a hard place now and do not, Not, NOT want a President Pence as a result of Trump resigning. Trump is incompetent to be president, but Pence has a religious malice and intelligence and intent on getting things done and that will not be good either.
So let's just take all of Congress and the presidency in 2020 be vigilant and persevere because this is a war that will not end with each battle, each election and its consequences being won by either the Democrats or the Republicans. The Left cannot abdicate its responsibility and duty to turn out and vote in strong numbers to thwart the GOP agenda for America. Yes, we will have imperfect candidates, ones who will not pass a purity test, but we need to work with what we have and improve it and move forward because as we surely should have learned from 2016 that it is either the Democrats or Republicans. We can make the Democrats better but the only thing for Republicans is to keep them from being elected.

I want the Re-putins to be crushed so hard in 2018 and 2020 that we control the Presidency, House, and Senate (with a filibuster-proof majority).

If having to look at Shithole's orange piggy face until then accomplishes that, so be it. Him getting impeached with Pence taking over would be even worse than it is now.

Pence got to be V.P. in the same way that Trump got elected, and on Trump's coat tails. Seems like our only chance to get rid of both of them (leaving worry about Ryan aside for now) would be Mueller's investigation hitting paydirt.

It's much easier to get a politician than a businessman with plausible deniability. First Pence, then Drumpf.
The GOP will force Drumpf's hand for a new VP (which probably means a marginally "clean" party guy like Sununu where there's no taint of Russia or Mob money or a benignly acceptable to moderates Koch back-bencher.) Then Drumpf goes down.

It's the paybook they have had to use before when the White House was discovered to be corrupt by the public. Nixon and Agnew almost killed their party, and drove out most of the moderates. It took the "hail Mary" of being able to put Reagan the Patsy on the top of the ticket with a whole lot of PR behind him to save them.

The Democratic Party must use every resource to convince the youth that their future is at stake and it is imperative for them to get registered and most importantly vote! We will never be able to convince the hard core Republican base that they are being taken for a fatal ride. Over fourth years of intense propaganda that has cast the Democrats as immoral, unpatriotic, godless pariahs can not be erased in one generation. The only hope is the total decimation of the leadership of their party with the overwhelming defeat of each and every Republican ranging from local and state elections to the federal elections. It is long past due that Democratic representatives cease any cooperation with the devil and denounce the Republicans as the greatest threat to the nation. The Republicans embrace of fascists principle and tactics must be met head on. Their is no time left for compromise. It is impossible to compromise with abject evil without tacitly embracing evil itself. I am convinced that the Republicans have chosen a path that is leading the nation into the abyss from which it will not recover. I am sorry my days are numbered and the days of knocking on doors and handing out flyers are over. I can only hope that the nation can right the ship and give the youth a future. But, most importantly, it is imperative that they be forewarned that their apathy could be fatal.

Even with some checks by a Democratic House, he can do tons of damage in 3 more years. I want him to not even finish his first time. You're banking really hard on hoping he can't win again in 2020. And we thought the same thing about 2016. There is absolutely no reason to take the risk of a 2020 election just to try to hurt his ego if he loses. Frankly, I think he'd be thrilled to lose in 2020 since he hates the job.

Let's stop saying we hope he lasts until that long so he can lose. He may not lose, and even if he does, it will be a relief for him. Better to remove him ASAP.

I think it might be better for him to serve out his term and then be defeated for re-election. If Trump were to be impeached or forced into resignation before his term was up, that might incite his base and make things worse for future elections.

possibly resulting in limited bloodshed. Trump is a narcissist with a despotic mindset. It’s not below him to encourage his followers to fight for him.

I hope that Trump is removed quickly and without incident, though that unfortunately seems unlikely.

when Nixon got re-elected in the middle of Watergate. Our nation survived it, but we took a severe hit. This hit will be bigger if we do not stop it sooner. I don't know if impeachment is the solution as his base will scream bloody murder and it could be bloody. We are better off at the ballot box this year and in 2020.

That's been the certainty all along. It's one of the reasons I don't put much stock in the historian view. There isn't going to be an Alexander Butterfield type to spill something vital. Instead you've got Lewandowski spewing obscenities and proud to do it.

I'm a little bit surprised that Trump took so long to find the perfect group of liars for the key positions. That indicates to me he really didn't expect to win. Otherwise a Sarah Huckabee would have held that press role from day one.

McCarthy is the best comparison, in terms of caliber of human being and who he surrounded himself with and what he was willing to do. Nixon is the sloppy comparison only because both were presidents.
