Trump wants to protect farmers from Chinese retaliation Trump wants to protect farmers from Chinese retaliation

President Donald Trump, wanting to protect U.S. farmers from China's threatened tariffs, may end up pitting his country against many more nations in a trade spat that has hit global markets and worried the international business community, experts said Friday.
If the Trump administration chooses to subsidize American farmers further, that could trigger retaliatory tariffs and subsidies in major exporters of agricultural products such as the European Union and Brazil, the experts added.
An additional agricultural subsidy from the U.S. "brings third parties into the dispute, who could be expected, at a minimum, to complain to the World Trade Organization," said Simon Baptist, Asia managing director and chief economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Chad P. Bown, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, sounded a similar warning. In a Twitter post, he said additional subsidies for American farmers would escalate trade tensions beyond the two largest economies in the world.

(1,245 posts)Subsidies should be targeted for growing something other than the standard fare (cotton, soybeans, wheat, and corn)
There also should be assistance/incentives to develop markets for alternative crops.

He doesn't give a fuck about farmers, even the ones who voted for him.

(6,072 posts)The Chinese tariffs are intended to hurt Trump voters so he'll back off escalating the trade war. They wouldn't hesitate to slap on enough import duties on our corn and soybeans to offset the subsidies to the point we'll be basically sending the stuff there for free.

Despite the rhetoric of "preserving the family farm," the vast majority of farmers do not benefit from federal farm subsidy programs and most of the subsidies go to the largest and most financially secure farm operations.
Small commodity farmers qualify for a mere pittance, while producers of meat, fruits, and vegetables are almost completely left out of the subsidy game (i.e. they can sign up for subsidized crop insurance and often receive federal disaster payments).
