it will be a mandate to impeach Trump. I told a Repub coworker that when he said impeachment would thwart the will of the voters.

Impeachment is almost symbolic, it doesn't do anything by itself.

(9,527 posts)There are only two parties and it's not like Democrats are running on impeaching. It wasn't a mandate for impeaching Obama when Republicans did so well in 2010.
There's also the political reality that we won't come close to having a 2/3rds majority in the Senate.

I suspect that you are correct.
Do you agree that impeachment is a political process? Some have said that.
In the case of Drumpf, the dangers of his incompetence takes impeachment out of the political realm. However, today's GOP will never see it any other way than political.
That's the real danger with pursuing impeachment at this time.
I am neutral on the issue at this time. We will just have to see how things work out.

(22,576 posts)Impeachment is a political process. For Democrats running for the House, would it be a good idea to make impeachment of Trump the front and center of their campaign? That would be pretty stupid because why would you want to motivate Republicans to get out and vote to support their guy if they might otherwise stay home.
Impeachment of Trump would be an act of self-indulgence by Democrats. Republicans impeached Clinton because they could and they could have impeached Obama but didn't.
Now if Democrats do win control of the House it would be by a narrow margin and it's not a slam-dunk that every Democrat would vote for impeachment (I could see posters here going nuts about that if it happened).
Even if he were impeached, Trump would never be convicted in the Senate, but he would be humiliated like he was by Obama at the correspondent's dinner and there would be hell to pay. As bad as Trump is now, imagine what he would be like then.
Impeach Trump and the Democrats would needlessly focus and motivate the GOP and many Republicans already look at showing up to vote as their duty. Frankly, in the long run I don't trust voters on the Left to dependably show up and vote because they become lazy and complacent and are not vigilant and then we'll find the Republicans back in power again and then if there is a Democratic president and Republicans will control the House, payback will be a bitch.
Ultimately, just because Democrats could impeach Trump doesn't mean that they should.
And I certainly don't believe that in every congressional district that voted for the Democrat they were doing it to give Democrats a mandate to impeach Trump.
