Rep. Beto ORourke (D-TX) knew, at the outset, that his campaign to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) would be a long shot. Texas had not voted for a Democratic senator in 25 years, ORourke didnt have statewide name recognition, and, moreover, he was pledging to run without taking money from political action committeesa potentially healthy spigot of campaign funds that he would be foregoing, the Daily Beast reports.
To overcome those odds, the Texas Democrat and his top aides placed a major bet on a novel strategy: they would dramatically break down the barriers between candidate and voter. ORourke would make heavy use of social media to essentially broadcast otherwise mundane daily functions. And he would treat the often-pesky task of campaign fundraising as an ongoing conversation rather than a plea for cash.

ORourke is using the same tools as a presidential operation, a Democrat directly familiar with the candidates operation told The Daily Beast. In fact, the ORourke campaign is employing two firms best known for their work on presidential campaigns: Blue State Digital technology, which worked on Barack Obamas 2008 and 2012 runs and Revolution Messaging, which was on Sanders 2016 effort.
At Revolution, there is one person in particular who operatives say is playing a major role in ORourkes fundraising bonanza. Shelby Cole, a senior digital strategist who is from Texas and has worked a number of smaller campaigns there previously, is point person on the ORourke account. Before joining the firm, she ran the email program for Wisconsin Democratic Senate candidate Russ Feingold. Feingold lost his bid for his old seat in 2016, but Cole helped him raise $7.4 million online.
Revolution did not make her available for an interview and instead referred The Daily Beast to ORourkes campaign. But other operatives who have worked with Cole praised her ability to help sell a candidate to voters without relying on desperate fundraising appeals like some of those much-maligned emails from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

(11,468 posts)I have daughter in Texas but she hates to talk politics with me because they are independents that lean right but did vote for Hillary because of Trumps values or lack thereof.
They dont pay attention or watch news so I usually dont bring anything up as subject gets changed instantly.
They arent religious, just one of those that likes tax cuts, which is dumb because they arent rich.
Husband is Lt Colonel in AF and almost done with his 20 yrs so they bought home near San Antonio. They were dems when he started and after 3 yrs at pentagon changed to right leaning.
