The GOP is the party of voter suppression and can only win races by cheating https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/4/5/1754685/-At-a-private-luncheon-Senator-Heller-says-low-turnout-is-key-to-re-election-promised-ACA-repeal
We now have less than 60,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans. Let me be more clear. If we can get that number below 50,000, I cant lose, Heller said Tuesday in Las Vegas, according to audio obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. I cant lose. Because the ratio of voter turnout in a non-presidential year were in a non-presidential year the tendency of Republicans to vote is higher than the other party.
A sitting U.S. senator is hoping people dont participate in democracy. How can you represent a state where you are trying to discourage the majority from turning out for an election? Based on current trends in special elections, Hellers strategy is going to be a loser. Bigly.

(14,531 posts)Can they remember more than 2 minutes in the past. they have control over all 3 houses and still can't get it repealed. So they continue to nip at it piece by piece.

(6,377 posts)He must not be paying attention to the special elections across the country this year. Some Republicans seriously have their heads in the sand.

(14,565 posts)I lived in Las Vegas for 25 years and I worked GOTV a couple of times, once in a presidential year and once in a midterm. It felt hopeless in the midterm. Democrats didn't seem to care.
Granted, this was early 2000s before Harry Reid and others fortified the Clark County operation. But Heller is relying on the long term trend of the so-called cow counties turning out heavily in midterms while Clark County comparatively snoozes. Reid had several very narrow escapes due to that dynamic, when his re-election bid fell in a midterm cycle as opposed to presidential year. He was underdog to Sharron Angle in 2010 but pulled it out in an upset due to heavy Hispanic support, which was under estimated in the pre election polls and apparently also in the initial exit polling.
Heller is pushing for Republicans to sharply out pace Democrats in registration numbers leading to November, dropping from a 59,000 deficit to below 50,000. That seemed to be the basis of his comment, far beyond the low turnout angle adopted by Daily Kos and in the header here. It is logical from his perspective. His is willing to take his chances on turnout as long as the bottom line registration numbers don't get too far out of hand.
Frankly it is the logical from his perspective and from the perspective of any Republican. That's why I have been emphasizing for more than a year that our focus should be almost exclusively on new registrations, instead of whining about Trump or to lesser extent worrying about GOTV. The GOTV shove is already handicapped if the registration bottom line is not where it needs to be, or where it should be given Trump's sustained low approval rating. Those college aged kids are willing to register in our favor but you have to make yourselves known. Otherwise they'll have the smart phone in their face all day and won't bother.
It is all about the math. The other side always understands that, while we often sleep. Nevada is not nearly as friendly to our side as conventional wisdom prefers, not in midterm years. Check Trump's approval rating in the state, which has always been higher than seemingly logical compared to other states that voted for Hillary.

(9,666 posts)That the GOP is only in it to win elections. Pretty much "damn the constituents, full power ahead".
