Multiple people are dead after a bus carrying a junior hockey team to a game in Saskatchewan collided with a transport truck on a rural highway, according to RCMP.

RCMP confirmed “fatalities” and a number of serious injuries in the crash involving the Humboldt Broncos team bus. Officials have not confirmed the number of dead and injured.

The crash occurred on Highway 335 near Gronlid, more than 200 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, late Friday afternoon.

The bus was T-boned by a transport truck, according to the president of the Nipawin Hawks, which was scheduled to play the Broncos Friday night.

"It's a horrible accident, my God," team president Darren Opp told The Canadian Press. "There's uncles and moms and dads waiting to hear whether their sons and nephews are OK.”

"It's terrible. It's absolutely terrible."

I am sorry for the losses of these families. Young men (17-21) cut down in their prime. Damn.
I used to ride these buses playing Junior B in Ontario in the late '70's. Long, cold, dark trips.

(snip)
The RCMP confirmed early Saturday morning that 28 people were on the bus, including the driver, 14 of whom were killed. The remaining 14 were taken to hospital with a range of injuries, including three in critical condition.

The crash, which involved a bus carrying members of the Humboldt Broncos, brought back memories of another fatal crash, in 1986, in which four members of the Swift Current Broncos were killed.

The Humboldt Broncos were traveling to Nipawin for Game 5 of the teams’ playoff series.

The Broncos’ playoff roster includes two dozen players ranging in age from 18 to 21. Their hometowns are mostly in Saskatchewan or Alberta.
