I suspect the referral to the USA in the SDNY had to do with possible criminal fucking-around by Cohen and his one and only client to pay money to Ms. Clifford to buy her silence. When Don dispatched Michele "Tom Hagen" Coheniti to pay a hunnert'n thirty large, do it under the cover of blind alleys, and then later throw Coheniti under the black Lincoln Town car on live TV aboard AF1, he started things moving in a new direction. For all of this, we should be grateful to America's Favorite Porn Star and her Hollywood lawyah, Smooth Mikey Avanatti.
Either of these could well be holding the key to the end of the Trumpoleone family's hold on America.

Now, what COULD happen is a reverse. Team Mueller referred to SDNY evidence possible election infractions discovered in the Russia probe. That not being their remit, they farmed out the evidence. Now the SDNY has access to every bit of communication between The Don and his Tom. It would sure be a shame should evidence of a collusive Russian nature be turned up as part of the "Stormy Probe" (I gotta copyright that! 
) and referred back to whence the remit came.
