in 1959, when I read my high school's dress code, which forbade the wearing of "dungarees." I had to ask what that meant, whereupon I was told it meant "Levis" or blue jeans. Why, I asked, did they not simply use those words? The next year, they changed the wording to reflect current usage.

Still, I went through high school in khaki trousers and tucked in shirts with collars, being always a "rule-following" sort of kid.

Oh, yes, girls were not allowed to wear "slacks" or "pedal-pushers" either. It was a transitional period, apparently.
