Breaking: Same-Sex Marriage Unanimously Included In DNC Platform
by David Badash on July 30, 2012
A plank supporting same-sex marriage will be included as part of the Democratic National Committees (DNC) platform, according to an exclusive report at the Washington Blade, which notes it was a unanimous decision. Also included is language supporting ENDA and rejecting DOMA. Retiring Congressman Barney Frank who sits on the committee, told the Washington Blade on Monday that the 15-member panel unanimously backed the inclusion of a marriage equality plank after a national hearing over the weekend in Minneapolis, in which several witnesses testified in favor of such language, Chris Johnson, writing at the Blade, reported today:
Frank emphasized that support for marriage equality is a position that has been established for the Democratic Party, from the president, who endorsed marriage equality in May, to House Democratic lawmakers who voted to reject an amendment reaffirming the Defense of Marriage Act earlier this month.
A DNC staffer, who is familiar with the process and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the language in the platform approved on Sunday not only backs marriage equality, but also rejects DOMA and has positive language with regard to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The exact wording of the language wasnt immediately available.
Back in February, Nancy Pelosi announced she was breaking with the DNC to lead them to include support for same-sex marriage equality as part of the 2012 DNC platform.

(40,416 posts)How about progressive liberals? How about the Occupy movement? How about the Democratic party?
LGBT is running a PhD course on successful political activism. Sure, it took decades. But to turn around cultural biases it takes that long. No! Victory isn't there yet. But like MLK -- and one supposes, Moses -- LGBT finally sees the promised land from the mountaintop.
Victory is sweet. Let us all hope that this is what it seems to be. An increasingly majority is on the same side.
It was done with exceptionally high art, but with significant sacrifices. If we all stay together, may many more taste the victory.

(39,343 posts)...about who marries whom?
I dont care who the guy down the street marries, be it guy or girl or houseplant. That some people want to prevent others from living their lives the way they want is simply insane.
I've got gay friends and if they want to get married, great go have fun and live a happy life.
I've got straight friends and if they want to get married, great.....
I'm friends with interracial couples and if they want to get married, great...
No one should get to prevent someone else from doing anything that doesnt hurt or affect them in any form or fashion simply because they dont like what they do or who they do it with.
The homophobes might want to get their house in order first before they start telling everyone else how to live their lives. And that most of this HATE comes from "christians" or other religious types is ridiculous. I dont recall Jesus or God being a mean homophobe, but then again I stopped going to church 20 years ago, so I dont know what they preach now.
Oh, and it's about damn time that it be allowed and included as part of the platform of any party that has "Progressive" ambitions.

(5,944 posts)During each election year for the past decade, I've attended my local Democratic Party Precinct Caucus, followed the next month by my State Senate District Convention.
At the caucus, people introduce resolutions recommending planks for the party platform. Those that gain enough support in the local State Senate District Convention are sent up to the Congressional District Convention, then perhaps to the State Convention, and ultimately, perhaps even to the Democratic National Convention.
Our little caucus has never failed to propose and endorse a plank for these LGBT rights, and our State Senate District Convention has always approved them by overwhelming vote. The same has been happening in thousands and thousands of small party meetings nationwide, for years.
All I'm sayin' is, it pays to go to meetin's. Rights are never handed down to the people from on high. They are won by the people, working from the ground up, uniting and combining their voices until their leaders can no longer ignore them.
And this is a moment to savor.

(146,338 posts)it was also voted in at the State Senate District convention. I was present for both, and wrote the resolution for the precinct caucus.
Getting involved in politics at the precinct level is a terrific way to participate.

Love this. It'll enrage the fringe on the right, but I, for one, am tired of setting the Democratic agenda based on approval from whackos in the other party.
Perhaps we'll finally test that old Truman adage, and start offering real Democratic ideals instead of fake Republican ones.
In the end, to me the question was always, "Just how does this affect you personally? If your marriage is so weak that something that someone else you don't even know can destroy it, perhaps you should look to your own house and stop hurting others."

(28 posts)I've been writing my Sen. and Rep. for years begging them to include Gay Marriage/Gay Rights.
It's been a long, hard pull, but it looks like we finally got it done w/great thanks to Pres. Obama.
I'm not gay, but I am progressive and I believe in equal rights for all.
