General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf a CEO said he didn't think racial intermarriage should be legal...
...And used his pay/fortune/salary from a business you frequent to fund campaigns to take those rights away, wouldn't you boycott that?
Shouldn't you?
Would taking your business elsewhere harm the workers who apparently mostly make about $8/hour? Possibly.
Would it put a dent in the pay and swagger of the vocal CEO who was using some of your money (even if it was a little) to spout bigoted things?
Yes, it would.
And a change of heart from that CEO means that the boycott needn't be permanent.
"My customers have spoken and I have seen the error of my ways. I will support civil rights, having learned a valuable lesson."
And we all could go back, or try it for the first time.
Think about history. Did Martin Luther King's civil sit-ins at Woolworth counters idle employees and cause layoffs?
Did his strike against the Montgomery bus system idle union bus drivers, some who had little say over the laws/rules supporting segregation?
Yes, it may have.
Did the grape boycotts help or hurt the Mexican farmworkers? It helped them, impressively.
Did our sanctions against South Africa in the 1980's, as well as massive boycotts and de-investments by places like California take business away from South Africa? Yes.
Did our actions then harm the people of South Africa --no it helped them, ultimately.
Did MLK Jr.'s actions harm the people of the South? No, he helped them, Civil Rights helps everyone and much progress was made because of his actions.
Boycotting is a peaceful method that works and in service of progressive causes, can do wonders to advance them. And that helps people.
To say that this peaceful means of defending civil rights is wrong, when history shows that it has been successfully and peacefully used to right wrongs many times, is foolish and it is not progressive.
Boycott all you want. If you want to help the people working there, and I would, it's not by buying chicken at Chick-Fil-A. And for all we know, if the CEO feels that way, it may be a bigoted place to work. This could change that, or send business to places that respect and encourage diversity.

It's all about possibly impacting the bottom line that he might fain a change of heart. Which IMO is fake.

(46,192 posts)it's not his heart I'm arguing with now, it's his actions.
if he believed what he believed now, but was supporting Civil Rights for business reasons, we wouldn't need to have this discussion.
so if we got there, that would be progress.
