When J.B. Pritzker decided to run for Illinois governor, he and Campaign Manager Anne Caprara talked about a problem that had bedeviled Hillary Clinton and, they feared, might imperil his own candidacy.
They were worried about deliberately misleading information spreading far and fast online. They were worried about fake news.
So the Pritzker campaign hired Democratic data science group Civis Analytics to conduct an in-depth online survey studying voters who had been exposed to fake news. What it found unsettled the campaign: Even attempts to correct the information didnt fully undo the damage. Worse yet, the damage was even greater for female candidates.
Caprara wouldnt share details from the survey, or even describe what it found when testing the effectiveness of various responses to fake news. But after reviewing the survey results, the Pritzker campaign launched an aggressive response operation that, in their view, at least minimized the damage.

(297,799 posts)It's encouraging to know that this candidate for Illinois Gov, JB Pritzker, is on it!
And, it should spread to all Dems running for office.
The money poured into to making "Fake News" into a reality for brainwashed gullible fish is astronomical.
Thank you, TexasT. Bookmarked.

(112,516 posts)it is how the media manipulated coverage for political advantage. It's good to see Pritzker fight it, but it does need to be taken up a level also to national media coverage.

I'm optimistic it will spread and only get better.. it's too important not to.

(25,686 posts)I think it's a good thing not to make public the details because remember the uproar about David Brock's Correct the Record? I still see mention of David Brock on wacko sites like Jackpineradicals -- that drove them insane! And it was simply hiring people to push back with facts against the fake news.

(9,500 posts)I seriously would have hoped that this would be something the DNC would be doing (surveillance, countermeasures). Hell at this point, if there is no effective ways to mitigate the effects of fake news, then we should be fighting fire with fire IMO. But I'm glad at least some of the more funded campaigns are thing about this, although I am concerned about a fragmented response.

Welcome to DU.
