Senate passes resolution allowing Duckworth to bring baby on floor

http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/383842-senate-passes-resolution-allowing-duckworth-to-bring-baby-on-floor

The Senate approved a resolution on Wednesday evening to allow Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) — the first senator to give birth while in office — to bring her baby onto the floor.

The chamber cleared the resolution by unanimous consent. It allows Duckworth, or any other senator, to bring a child younger than one year of age onto the floor during votes.

"The Senate is leading by example and sending the important message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies. These policies aren’t just a women’s issue, they are a common-sense economic issue," Duckworth said in a statement.

Duckworth had voiced concerns about the Senate rules making it harder for her to do her job. In order to vote, senators need to be in the Senate chamber in person.

living in the White House!

Though two and a half is a little old for weaning.

So she can just be the first President to be the mom of a two year old.

And by Unanimous consent. Meaning there wasn't a douchebag who decided to pop up to block it and force a vote. Whoda thunk it?

That was 20 years ago. Her office was separate from the rooms she would see patients in. In between seeing patients, she stopped in her office to check on her baby. I thought it was wonderful. Of course, eventually the baby grew, went off to preschool and was gone from the office. But I'll always remember what a great setup that was.

I said they wouldn't do it. So ill eat my Crow like a Big Boy.

Glad for her, and for working parents everywhere. They need as many breaks as we can give them. The GOP apparently know this (is it possibly because this is 'one of their own', and they wouldn't give a damn if she was one of the pesants?).

I'm really trying to be positive...but then my brain reminds me that Donald Goddamn Trump is squatting in the WH soooo...

Back before Senator Duckworth gave birth and a petition was going around.

I said I understood the Senate should be a dignified body and if nothing else given Senator Duckworth's service-related injuries a room close enough to the floor so she could get there and vote, should be provided. That yes this might seem to benefit "the opposition" right now, but as more Conservative women run and are elected they will probably have more kids. Fairness and all.

But then I said, "Truthfully there have been people being babies on the Senate floor enough in debates that a legitimate one being briefly present during a vote, even if unhappy, shouldn't be much more disruptive, though..." and both aides laughed.

*My personal tactic for phone calls I can stomach the pretense on, given my reps/senators are all red.

Don't know if my call helped but glad for Senator Duckworth and all future parents in the Senate!

Someone must have sent a memo around to GOP members that read: "Until November, pretend we care about kids." They'll probably put this in campaign commercials to try to get women to vote for them.
