General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHave there been any polls regarding the American public's opinion about the Korea summit?
I am specifically wondering if a poll is out there that shows how many of the people in this nation who currently do not approve of Trump would change their mind if:
* North and South Korea agree to a peace treaty.
* North and/or South Korea credit Trump with the signing of this treaty.
* The US-Korea summit goes smoothly.
* Kim actually agrees to an unambiguous denuclearization plan at any point in the near future.
* There emerges verifiable, unambiguous proof that some of Kim's nuclear arsenal has been deactivated/demolished.
* There emerges verifiable, unambiguous proof that ALL of Kim's nuclear arsenal has been deactivated/demolished.
If successful, this would be the first clearly good action of the Trump administration that we cannot give anyone else credit for. Fox news and Trump himself would yammer about this non-stop. It may even give him the a comparable national favorability boost to W and his father's military campaigns. This would definitely be the greatest obstacle to voting out Trump in 2020 and may even be the greatest obstacle in this year's midterms. I'm honestly surprised that Republican congresspeople aren't talking more about this summit.
In case anyone is wondering, this alone would not be anywhere near enough to change my mind about this turgid administration.

(54,770 posts)something concrete comes out of all this. I think if there is some kind of treaty, trump would have more or less stumbled into it after years of starving N Koreans.
Similarly, IF -- THAT BIG IF, AGAIN -- trump increased social security, help enact a viable public option health plan, etc., and paid for it by increasing taxes where they belong, I'd give him credit. But, that is not likely to happen, short of a brain hemorrhage with a positive change in ideology, along with Democrats taking the House and Senate in November.
I think Democrats would look foolish if they did not give him credit for positive things that are attributal to him. That hasn't occurred yet. Although, I'd probably have to characterize things like, "Despicable racist trump stumbles into a tenuous Korean accord started by Dennis Rodman."

(31,261 posts)happens with North Korea. I just don't think that Trump has the willingness to learn or discipline to make something good happen. But he has opened a big window of opportunity for the next democratic President to talk directly to Kim, if President Obama had tried what Trump is doing, the right would have roasted him.

(3,515 posts)been improving for years. I would have to credit previous presidents like Obama and even Bush for steadying that relationship and not over-reacting to the various dictators of N. Korea and their aggressivity.
In my book, Trump is simply taking credit for the moderate reactions of previous presidents to the various N. Korean dictators' crazy conduct.
I don't think that Americans have any particular resentment toward N. Korea but rather are and have been simply concerned about how the dictators of N. Korea treat their own people.
So N. Korea decides to treat us with less hostility and maybe even becomes a friend to us and to S. Korea, Trump will not and should not get much credit. This relationship has been improving for many years and should continue to improve.
But the economic state of N. Korea is, if what I read is accurate, absolutely horrible, and we might be able to help them improve it.
I don't hear people in the US saying anything bad about N. Korea other than about their obsession with nuclear weapons and their hatred for us. I don't think Americans are particularly interested in or impressed with what Trump may or may not be doing in with regard to our relationship with N. Korea.
We aren't hostile to N. Korea. We aren't particularly interested in N. Korea.
