The Obama-era net neutrality rules, passed in 2015, are pretty much dead.

As of Monday, some of the proposals regarding the Republican-led FCC's oversight of the internet, known as "Restoring Internet Freedom," will go into effect. Because this is Washington, DC, and nothing is simple, key parts of the proposal, which include the changes to net neutrality, don't go into effect until a vote by the Office of Management and Budget.

The OMB wasn't available to comment on when the vote would take place. But this is just a procedural step. The net neutrality rules as we knew them will be no more.

Though many people agree with the basic principles of net neutrality, those specific rules had been a lightning rod for controversy. That's because to get the rules to hold up in court, an earlier, Democrat-led FCC had reclassified broadband networks so that they fell under the same strict regulations that govern telephone networks.

I think the upside here is they know this is not going to last, so they are going to jump right into charging premiums. We are going to need Democrats to fight for this issue. Some will, some unfortunately receive s lot of cash from big telecom. The R's are a lost cause on this issue. Greed First, is their motto.

8. Dems need to make this a campaign issue!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps, just perhaps, even more than guns, net neutrality will get young people to vote. I heard my students talking about it last October/Nov. I was amazed at how much the issue captivated them and they are upset!! Is the Democratic Party listening? This is a perfect issue for them to add to health care and other issues on which to campaign!

I'm not even sure health care is a campaign issue this cycle. There is a lot of anger but no real platform. I think mainstream voters are more galvanized by corruption and misuse of public funds. Really though, if we win what are we going to do. Trump has changed a variety of policies to enable a few rich people to dominate the many. Revoking net neutrality is bad for small business and individuals. This is a great lead point to make the case that some regulation actually promotes business, creates jobs, and promotes freedom. Something many people, in this country and out, have lost touch with.

Besides, if we win we need to have an agenda to undo the damage done and we need a mandate for that agenda. Go ahead and campaign on corruption and incompetence, but also raise the consciousness of policy like this that we need to preserve our freedom. The tea party hated Obama, but they also had a clear policy agenda that kept their base activated at election time.
