Trump admin set to cancel temporary residency permits for 9,000 immigrants from Nepal
The Trump administration is readying the cancellation of Temporary Residency Permits (TPS) for roughly 9,000 Nepalis immigrants, according to The Washington Post.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will allow the Nepali immigrants one-year to prepare to leave the U.S. by June 24, 2019, according to documents obtained by The Post.
A DHS spokesperson told The Hill that the department will make an announcement on the matter in the coming days.
TPS allows foreigners to stay in the U.S. so they do not have to return to countries rocked by crises such as war and natural disaster.
Nepalis were given TPS in 2011 after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the country, leaving almost 9,000 people dead.
Immigration hardliners within the administration have long promoted getting rid of TPS protections for immigrants.
