(6,009 posts)I admit that in the past I told a number of 'jokes' in this vein, that I feel embarrassed about now. I believe that a large part of the measure of a person is not just the correctness of the actions they have taken, but how they respond to education about their incorrect actions, and whether or not their incorrect actions are a product of their upbringing.
It makes a difference whether someone is merely reproducing mistakes they have been taught by their upbringing, or by society in general, or have they sought out and cultivated these unsavory ideals. It makes a difference whether someone continues to be part of the problem after being called out, or sees the error or their ways and has a change of heart.
It seems to me that although Joy Reid may have had some thoughtless quips in the past, she has apologized for them and had been doing good work for a long time. I know who my friends are, and she's on the list. Anyone coming for her head can step the f right off. Any standard that would but her head on the chopping block, should set a lot more people in the media in line in front of her, so until the people calling for her head start calling others out, I will severely question their motives.

(2,078 posts)An excellent female journalist/media host's career is threatened because some on the right and left are dragging up 7+ YO posts. Making the point that Bill Maher and some on this very board have said similar to worse about Coulter and face no recrimination, and pointing out that Joy is with us 100% of the time is hardly making something a contest.

(34,857 posts)1) Maher lost his show on ABC because of some comments people found deplorable.
2) Maher is a comedian, whether you find him funny or not.
3) Maher doesn't shy away from his remarks - he is who he is. You like him or you don't.
4) Maher HAS been trashed for his comments on DU and other progressive sites over the years.
5) Maher isn't making up some crazy story about being hacked and lying about those comments.
Joy's biggest folly was not owning these comments, apologizing and saying, "I'm sure there's more in my past and I apologize for that, too. I have evolved. I have matured. I have worked with countless other people who've shown me how to better myself and I've done all I can do to become a more inclusive human being. I am deeply sorry for my comments and I can only hope my future deeds will prove how much I value diversity and inclusion..."
Had she done that, she would've been criticized, probably shamed for a few days BUT EVERYONE would have moved on.
Instead, she kept this story alive by pushing an idea she was hacked...which is just opening the gates to more proof she isn't and more instances of her stupid tweets. THAT'S on her. Not anyone else.

(53,991 posts)If not, then I can see why you don't see the comment as transphobic.

(41,991 posts)I have friends who are each of those. Drag queens arent necessarily gay or trans and trans women really tend to just want to live as regular women, not drag queens. I know others have given Ann Coulter varying degrees of shit for looking male (I disagree) but its not the same.
Behind the Aegis
(53,991 posts)However, who does drag? Men. So pretending Coulter is a drag queen is the same as saying she is a man dressed as a woman. That is the transphobia.
nolabear
(41,991 posts)Okay. Mind you I see insensitivity in the tweet but not phobia. And not what Id mean by transphobia.
Behind the Aegis
(53,991 posts)I know what "trans" mean, I know it does not mean "cross-dresser". For that matter, drag queen also does not mean "cross dresser". The phobia comes from the use of "drag queen" as a pejorative for a cis-gender woman. It is both misogynistic and transphobic, in much the same way "mAnn Coulter" is. The implication is she is a not a real woman, but a man masquerading as a woman.
nolabear
(41,991 posts)Transphobic has never meant transvestite as far as I know.

she's an offensive person who says many offensive things and there are plenty of ways to appropriately insult her.
treating being transgender or cross-dressing as an insult and then applying it to her isn't among them.

(67,782 posts)So don't lecture me about not seeing anything wrong with homophobic crap.
What is rightfully getting the pushback here and in the dozens of other discussion on this issue is that some, who have participated in almost ALL of these discussions, are insisting that it is "her" homophobic crap, which is still not known for sure.
Until we do know for sure, I'm not accusing her, trying her, and sentencing her for something that, as one referred to yesterday, "she may or may not have said." I find it disappointing that some are doing so here on Democratic Underground.

(21,786 posts)These words dehumanize transgender people and should not be used in mainstream media. The criteria for using these derogatory terms should be the same as those applied to vulgar epithets used to target other groups: they should not be used except in a direct quote that reveals the bias of the person quoted. So that such words are not given credibility in the media, it is preferred that reporters say, "The person used a derogatory word for a transgender person." Please note that while some transgender people may use "tranny" to describe themselves, others find it extremely offensive.

(10,584 posts)Its been years since Ive seen you on here! 😀
I think you hit the nail on the head. People evolve.
Whats disappointing to me is seeing the homophobia and transphobia glossed over like its not real or not hurtful/harmful because it was/May have been in the past. The rhetoric is just as harmful, regardless of its source and age. To just look the other way or make excuses doesnt help diminish a real issue thats probably more important in the long run than one celeberty being hacked or not.
yardwork
(61,712 posts)I agree 100% about how hurtful it is for posters here to gloss over the hurtful words. While I have deep suspicions about the timing and source of these revelations, it is playing into our enemies' hands when we turn on one another. Many of the responses in dsc's thread are disheartening.
People, acknowledge that the words and homophobia are wrong.

(13,305 posts)..by a nefarious and calculated hacking campaign.....it would DEFINITELY be the person on a cable news channel for 2 hours in the morning....on weekends. Oh, and a column in The Daily Beast.
I mean they just can't have that kind of raw journalistic power going unchecked! I mean everyone else on TV is totally pro-Trump and Joy Reid is definitely the only voice in a wilderness of people praising Trump left and right. Clearly she needed to be stopped!

(2,872 posts)when it was does to Michelle Obama by the crazy right ( my boss is a crazy right winger & he forwarded me some of those emails).. then you should not be OK with that.. simple stuff here folks.. I don't watch Joy so I couldn't care less.. plenty of great progressives voices to be found..
Also, the hacking allegations need a THOROUGH investigation.. I guarantee you a RW nutjob will be exposed for something & this will be the new default defense.. like "fake news" has become en vogue.. we can't give them an out

(3,269 posts)In an age of information warfare that is undermining our democracy, we need to be alert to the situations that can tear us apart.
This is one of them.
I am a member of the LGBT community. I am also an American who believes in the rule of law and in civility. This situation has the feel of an organized campaign to rile up a clamoring crowd for a public lynching. Let's cool down here.
Otherwise, we may one day find ourselves shattered into warring factions and ultimately in a place where there is no freedom and support for the voices of gays, women and minorities.
