there was a woman who could only read in transliteration. She insisted that the teachers transliterate everything for her. When they wouldn't, she tried to recruit fellow students (including me). She refused to learn the alphabet.

Then there was my Hebrew professor who absolutely loathed my Ashkenazi pronunciation of Hebrew. When I was taking Yiddish and Hebrew at the same time, whew did I get her riled up!

It may be because I was always part of the Ashkenazi community (although there was one woman I met in Albuquerque who was from a marrano family).

Did you know that there was a "secret" language between Jews and Romani? There was this guy in grad school who was studying German, and he told me all about it. Since both peoples were marginalized, they developed a language to communicate certain things just among themselves (like "There is a pogrom in the next town, so watch out" ). I always thought that was fascinating. Of course, since it was mainly a spoken language, not much remains today.

as the Ladinos were expelled from Spain. One step ahead of the Inquisition. A lot of the blood flowing through Mexican veins in the borderlands between the US & Mexico is Sephardic. Some know it, some don't.

If you visit these places you will see women, with blue or green eyes, wearing head scarves in the traditional way. The children playing a game they call 'Quita y Pon' (Put and take away) with a top you will immediately recognize as a dreidel.

And the flour tortillas, well, what can I tell you about unleavened bread...

Anything to escape the horrors that eight days of matzoh can do to a person. I tend to agree with that assessment.
