General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMichelle Wolf referred to Huckster, Jr. as (an) Aunt Lydia.
I can't speak for other women but I've viewed conservative women as Serena Joys or Aunt Lydias (as well as Econowives) since 1985, when "The Handmaid's Tale" was first published.
Wolf's comments had nothing to do with how Huckster, Jr. looks and everything to do with how SHS props up and supports the misogynistic agenda of the "Commanders/Angels/Guardians/Sons of Jacob" (conservative men).
Her other comments had nothing to do with looks either. Wolf called a liar a liar. Shocking.
Wolf simply let loose a small portion (a very small portion) of the anger many women (myself included) feel about conservative women who support the oppression of women in the name of their own (supposed) "goodness" and (self) righteousness.
I loved the Aunt Lydia comment.

(90,773 posts)There are times when people will take the associations they make and project them onto the speaker.
Now, sometimes, there is no doubt what people mean, eg dog whistles.
But I think Wolf meant that some in the press lob softballs. Also, SHS has a habit of making a point of who she (and her boss) thinks of as "fake news", eg - fake news team v. fox news (which SHS and her boss think of as an actual news station). When watching SHS in action I have noticed her attempting to divide the press into for Trump and against Trump teams, and it is obvious who she favors.

(24,578 posts)She and other conservative women enable the misogyny and patriarchy that take away women's rights to their own bodies and lives. Their self-righteousness makes me ill.

(25,544 posts)Obviously the gist of the jokes was that Sanders is no friend to the truth or to women. Maybe because Sanders' looks are often commented on, people have that in their heads when she's mentioned and their minds immediately went there.

"If youre not familiar with the common parlance of cosmetics, you might not know that a perfect smokey eye is a very nice way to describe a womans makeup glamorous, well-applied, nicely smudged. But on the morning after the White House Correspondents Association (WCHA) dinner on Saturday night, you might have thought otherwise.
Comedian Michelle Wolf was slammed by a wide range of commentators for saying just that about the press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, during her keynote roast: I actually really like Sarah, Wolf said. I think shes very resourceful. But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. Like maybe shes born with it, maybe its lies. Its probably lies.
Watching a wife and mother be humiliated on national television for her looks is deplorable, wrote MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski, overlooking the crucial fact that Wolf was in fact complimenting the appearance of Sanders makeup. Wolf was mocking the fact that Sanders is a liar. Which is something that she definitely is."

"Its a shame that those on the right have used the concept of snowflakes as an insult against those who oppose them, because time and time again its clear that no one is more sensitive than the far-right who follow Trump in lock step and cant take a compliment from the other side about eye-shadow."

(90,773 posts)Some have gone so far to say that they aren't the "bad" characters (the Serena Joys/Aunt Lydias, etc. from the show/book) - liberals are.
There is a disconnect there.
To say the least.
I gathered, from reading the article, that a lot of conservatives never read the book and it took the series to bring it to their attention.
