hey, guess what! turns out, michelle wolf is a woman!

i know, shocking, right??

my first clue was the right-wing telling her to shut up and that something she said was offensive somehow.

so i did some looking into it and my hunch was right! she's a woman!

i should be a detective or something!

sorry, no link.

More rationalizing from the Concern Department throwing whatever they can at the wall is *almost* as entertaining as were the jokes.

Losing, indeed.

(I'm pretty sure the sympathy the joke engendered is as fallacious and transparent as are the criticisms of the original joke...)

It's fun to pretend we're offended by a comedian doing precisely what comedians do. No make-up jokes for comedians seems a rather irrational course of comedic interpretation (e.g., Lucille Ball had three great routines on bad make-up)... rather than focusing on the butt of the jokes-- Sanders' lies.

That person is really trying to drive a narrative to you. . .

Fact Check - She literally said - the PERFECT SMOKY EYE.

And hell to the yeah women compliment other women on their appearance.

What she did point out was WHERE she sourced the charcoal eyeliner from to do the smudge.

she said that the eye liner was made from burnt facts. That is not a compliment, but it isn't a knock on physical appearance. You should probably look elsewhere for entertainment since you don't seem to enjoy Ms. Wolf's comedy styling.
You may remember that Steven Colbert did the same gig a few years back. When he did there was one critique that really stood out to me. It was this one by Richard Cohen. [link:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/03/AR2006050302202.html|

Allow me to put forth a small sample:

First, let me state my credentials: I am a funny guy. This is well known in certain circles, which is why, even back in elementary school, I was sometimes asked by the teacher to "say something funny" -- as if the deed could be done on demand. This, anyway, is my standing for stating that Stephen Colbert was not funny at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. All the rest is commentary.

The commentary, though, is also what I do, and it will make the point that Colbert was not just a failure as a comedian but rude. Rude is not the same as brash. It is not the same as brassy. It is not the same as gutsy or thinking outside the box. Rudeness means taking advantage of the other person's sense of decorum or tradition or civility that keeps that other person from striking back or, worse, rising in a huff and leaving. The other night, that person was George W. Bush.

Colbert made jokes about Bush's approval rating, which hovers in the middle 30s. He made jokes about Bush's intelligence, mockingly comparing it to his own. "We're not some brainiacs on nerd patrol," he said. Boy, that's funny

In this case you are playing the Richard Cohen part and Michelle Wolf is playing Steven Colbert.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is -- let me just say it as a woman of mature years with my own figure flaws -- she is as homely as a mud fence and she has almost no idea how to dress to flatter her figure, nor does she have any idea that her hairdo is more appropriate to a child than a woman of her age. Scaramucci himself called her out for her hair and makeup on national television. Before he was fired, he called in a stylist and that helped somewhat, but not a lot.

Sarah's biggest problem is not other women being mean girls, it is the nasty contemptuous expression on her face and the FACT that she is an eager and daily participant in destroying our government by the LIES she tells. She metaphorically burns FACTS to ASHES and uses them for a glamorous look. Let me extend the metaphor by asking what she uses for concealer? As in concealing the truth?

She turns them into "smoky eye."

Get it?

You really are all up in knots about Michelle Wolf, aren't you? You keep calling her "trump like" but ignore such jokes from men....

Something about her making jokes gets you offended, while you call Colbert a hero, and you "miss Jon Stewart"

Stewart who had a gospel choir sing "go fuck yourself"

And Colbert, your hero, is still a hero for going much, much "lower" than an eyeliner joke - by your very own standards. (You and MLK, of course...)

And yet, the pro-choice movement was not "set back" despite your claims that somehow it will be harmed, and Trump "helped" if Michelle Wolf says something about it.

Kaling stressed, “My show is as much about gynecology as ‘The Office’ was about paper.” While “a lot of women like look to me,” Kaling admitted, “abortion is not a hilarious subject.”

But “It’s a funny word,” Colbert interjected. Going along with the applause, he continued, “It’s like guacamole.”

In his monologue following the inauguration of President Trump, he decided to highlight the quoting of the Book of Solomon in the ceremony’s benediction. The verse reads “let us grasp what is pleasing to you, [Lord].” Colbert, chose to use that line to make a joke about Trump’s horrible comments about women that were unearthed during the campaign.

Your statements have been rebutted, your contradictions pointed out, your multiple rants addressed on different OPs.

You just don't like her. You really get uncomfortable and angry, and you don't need to justify it with claims that she's harming Democrats or will bring down reproductive rights, or that MLK would agree with you that she's on par with violence in the streets.

You can just admit when someone gets under your skin, and people will respect that way more than simply trying to make other people feel bad for not supporting your irritation with her.

Michelle Wolf made some clever jokes about how Huckabee lies, and worked the Maybelline tag and a currently popular makeup look into a statement about how Huckabee burns truth.

Attacks on HRC were not jokes.

Is that clearer?

A double standard is when you go through the roof when a woman tells political jokes, some with shock value, and you think it's fine when male comedians do the same thing on their shows.

BTW - your "hero" Colbert had this to say about Michelle's act (get ready to clutch your pearls - he tells the press to "grow a pair" )

https://www.thedailybeast.com/stephen-colbert-goes-off-on-the-whca-over-michelle-wolf-grow-a-pair

Also, you continue to say that "no one had heard of her" before this, when you've been corrected that she is on the Daily Show, and has apparently good enough to get her own show.

That's just persisting in a fallacy. You get more respect when you acknowledge when you are shown to be wrong.

They are both highly visible, controversial figures who are doing much to ruin democracy in the United states. Sometimes you get what you deserve.

Having said that, I agree with others here, that NO joke was made about SHS's looks or makeup. The political satire was about how she lies, and what she does with the ashes of the facts she burns every day.

OK, it is remotely possible that you simply have a reading comprehension problem.

OR, it is more likely you just are biased and you cannot refute what I have said so you have to twist it around until the new creation of yours is something you can attack. Rather disengenuous in this case.

Nobody was mansplaining anything. And nobody is trying to protect Sanders. I made the point a long time ago that I detest Sanders and all the lies she stands for. And that I am frustrated that Wolf has succeeded in doing what I had heretofore thought impossible, made Sanders a sympathetic figure. I believe in women's rights, I do not believe women should be objectified, they should not be made fun of for their weight, makeup, age, or any of that just for a punch line in a "joke"....that is demeaning towards women in general and Wolf's attempt to be funny crossed into that territory, in my view. It is true Trump has done worse, but two (or a thousand) wrongs don't make a right, even if our side is doing it.

I understand you disagree. And, for that matter, most of DU. We can all disagree. It sure would be boring if everyone agreed. But you really need to take a look at yourself and at least TRY to honestly represent what other people have to say instead of being so malicious and petty

You are perfectly free - despite your claims of being "silenced" - to simply not engage in a discussion. A discussion takes two, does it not? Yet you seem to be flummoxed by that, and have referred to it as being "supressed."

What issues do you have with someone replying to your posts, and pointing out where they see contradictions from previous posts, insults, mansplaining, talking about women as though being a "working mom" in a high profile job of lying for a public figure requires that men step in when "mean lady comedians" mention makeup, if indeed those opinions are based in fact?

That doesn't really indicate an openness to listening, but rather enjoying simply lecturing to the vast majority of progressives here on DU that they simply don't understand how Wolf (who you keep insisting that "no one ever heard of before this, and is simply in this for the MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!i could possibly be a "skilled" comedian (despite the fact that she is on the Daily Show, and has earned her own show somehow despite you erroneously, and continually claime "no one ever heard of her before this" ) and anyone who disagrees with you CLEARLY doesn't understand that MLK would disapprove because you do (your words) ...

Like I would say to Sarah three names, who you think needs "support" from men to do her damn job, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."

And why don't you tell me what you think we "disagree" on. Your post had several insults and implied slams - I just want to be clear on which ones you were trying to shiv with. If you have the courage to own your statements, that is.

Maybe they will think of being told to shut up if they don't agree with you as some sort of gift.

As your 'hero' Colbert told those who are clutching their pearls over a lady comedian,

https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a20111820/stephen-colbert-michelle-wolf-white-house-correspondents-dinner/

“First, Michelle, let’s address your potty mouth. What the fuck was up with that? This is the Correspondents’ dinner, celebrating the freedom of speech. You can’t just say whatever you want! You don’t go to a funeral and say exactly what you thought of the person! And what is the annual Correspondents’ dinner but a funeral for the independent press?”

Look, you didn’t like it? You have that right. Don’t invite her back again. But grow a pair . . . This was a roast. And you’re the ones who hired Michelle Wolf. Being mad at her for doing her job is like accusing the valet of briefly stealing your car. And stop acting like you’re surprised! I thought newspeople did research. But you’re telling me you couldn’t spend 90 seconds on YouTube to find out what her act was like? As a great man once said, ‘Fake news.’”

"I actually really like Sarah," Wolf said. "I think she's very resourceful. Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like, maybe she's born with it; maybe it's lies. It's probably lies."

This is being cast as an attack on Huckabee Sanders' appearance, when in fact it's a makeup brand reference, as any casual reader of a woman’s magazine understands.

https://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a20102293/whcd-michelle-wolf-sarah-huckabee-sanders/

Sanders is in politics. She doesn't need you or her daddy to worry about people talking about mean about the lies she tells.

Since you are so fond of calling anyone who disagrees with you on this "immature" and "grade school" if you want to pick Sanders as your foursquare buddy at recess, that would be a nice gesture.

I haven't heard her comment at all on Wolf. Perhaps you can share your source?

She clearly wasn't hobbled enough by the mean lady comic's comments on her lying by way of attacking her unforgivably on her eye makeup that she couldn't come out and lie to reporters yesterday about how the WH seizing POTUS' medical records from his physician was a standard operating procedure.

She was also bravely sporting her smokey eye makeup.

Interesting how you feel authorized to speak for her, and splain "her side," for her. It's not like she's a communications professional that can speak for herself as well as lie for the administration.

You seem to feel a need to educate gals here on DU who just don't understand how a "working mother" needs defending from a lady comic talking about eyemakeup, like you and CPAC are so bravely, manly and authoritatively doing.

Proceed.

Mon Apr 30, 2018, 02:23 PM

You jump through hoops to accuse her of:

-Helping Trump
-Setting back the pro-choice movement
- Distracting from Huckabee lying, by making a joke about where she gets her "perfectly" done eyeliner (burnt facts)
- Disrespecting MLK's admonition to non-violence with her comedy
- Disrespecting Michelle Obama's advice to college students about dealing gracefully with personal experiences of discrimiation with her comedy
-Profiting off this, because "no one heard of her before," and now she gets publicity for her new show that she somehow got from being "unheard of."

And your favorites are Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert.....

Am I missing anything?

The only people that seem to hate her more are Right Wingers. This goes way, way beyond, "I thought it was in bad taste" to her "damaging the country" with her one routine.

Did Larry Wilmore do half as much in your opinion, when he called President Obama the N word at this dinner in 2016? Michelle and Barack laughed, BTW, and Barack gave him a hug right after that.

You seem to have some very, very different standards for some comedians. I never heard of a comedian with the sheer destructive power that you bestow on Wolf, since at least the Salem Witch trials. Or some of the comments that I've heard about Hillary..

What is your special issue with Wolf?

Huckabee Sanders spreads Trump's lies like manure.

They should be fought. But we gotta fight smart. Turning attention away from Sanders' lies and to her makeup was agonizingly ineffective.

On abortion: " "He thinks abortion is murder which, first of all, don't knock it 'til you try it — and when you do try it, really knock it. You know, you've got to get that baby out of there."

Sorry, but there is a reason this was met with groans.

Add to that the wish that a tree fall on Kellyanne Conway. Is that supposed to be funny? I hate Kellyanne. But still....if donald trump said a similar thing about a journalist....you would not be thinking it is funny!

But I think Wolf's stuff was more for shock value than anything else. Some of the stuff was met with boos and groans. Not much applause at all.

But she did what she set out to do. She used shock value to make herself the talk of the town. Now she will be the subject of conversaton for the next week or so and she will make tons of money from her new show.

All it takes is a few lame jokes, some cheap shots, and an unhealthy measure of shock value.

There are a couple of factoids you seem to miss. 1) Sanders is a woman too....and making personal attacks with strong hints at her makeup is something the entire DU community would attack if the president was a Democrat and the press secretary was a working mother....2) the hints at ageism and the idea that women have a shelf life based on looks and age would be denounced with fury instead of laughing along with references to The Handmaid's Tale.

I am not attacking Wolf on a personal level. I am resisting the piling on when she personally attacked and humiliated a working mother.
Who happens to be a Republican (which I disagree with) and a subordinate of the person who has the power, Trump (whom I hate)

We are upset when Republicans won't criticize the excesses of Trump....we say they have drunk the Koolaid, etc. We should be better. We can be better. We don''t have to march, like lemmings, whenever someone throws us red meat to make us feel good and channel our hate

You think she needs you and her daddy to tell everyone to stop being so "mean?"

That's the opposite of feminist - which isn't surprising given your trashing of Wolf for talking like a male comedian would.

May 2018

"being trumplike" "helping Trump" "nobody heard of her before," "saying anything to get money, money, money" "setting back the pro-choice movement," "attacking down a working mother," that you tried to defend your rage at Wolf by trying to convince it was about "standing up for a working mother," after several of your other attacks had been shot down as either non-factual, contradictory, or just plain not getting a joke.

By the way, Michelle Wolf is a working mother, too. And since you keep proclaiming that "nobody heard of her before this" that you didn't know that this "money grubber" as you described her is also in your 'victim' category.

Feel good about that "little factoid you missed," as you so condescendingly shot at poster who had actually not missed a thing.

You dehumanized working mothers when you seemed to think that SHS needed you to scold everyone, because she's "a working mother" as if she is defined by her offspring, and because of those offspring, she really can't function in a high powered, public job, lying for a POTUS, if someone points out what she's doing.

That shows more disrespect for Huckabee than any comedian - male or female, or anyone here on DU. Not to mention it's slap in the face of working mothers who have to deal with that sort of paternal "concern" for their feelings by men who don't think they can handle it.

That's the kind of casual sexism that Paul Ryan and Mike Pence are known for. Is that the "tribe" you really want to align with?

You may want to find another place to post than DU, if that's how you justify your outsized anger at a lady comic who said some things you don't think are ladylike.

I can't imagine what a woman who lives with you must experience.

Apr 2018

I hate to pile on. But seriously, can you not separate metaphor from reality?

1. She did not mention her physical appearance other than to say she wore the "perfect smokey eye". Any reference to her appearance from her makeup was positive.

At least be clear that you're main critique is NOT her being ridiculed for her looks, but, from reading your followup posts, for the idea that Wolf suggested that Sarah, or any women, would be so insane?, cheap?, dumb? to actually use ash as part of her make up routine. I mean, even IF it looked "perfect", and no one could tell, who would do that right?

Answer: no one would, at least as raw eye shadow. That is the first clue for you that it is a METAPHOR and not an actual accusation of what ingredients she smears on her face.

Like she could have said she balls up her daily lies on paper into little balls and strings them together and wears it as her oft worn pearl necklace. But maybe even that is too harsh an attack on her appearance (even if she says it looked perfect).

2. "away from her lies"? She actually says "But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies."

3. Just for your own education on make up ingredients. Its been used from ancient Rome until the present day:

http://www.ancient-origins.net/history/swans-fat-crocodile-dung-and-ashes-snails-achieving-beauty-ancient-rome-003240

The eyes were accentuated by the use of kohl, a blackening substance made from ashes or soot, mostly, brought to the Romans by the Egyptians and still used in Turkey today. It was applied like modern day eyeliner is, just under and above the eyes to bring out their natural color according to Ovid.

And using it as a beauty product is all the rage in Asia

https://www.rd.com/health/beauty/volcanic-ash-mask/

...the latest trend is using volcanic ash products to help clear the pores once and for all.
With the name “volcanic ash,” it definitely sounds like it’s a product that would do some serious fighting against our clogged pores and get the job done. It claims to do just that, but is really much simpler and doesn’t work nearly as harshly as the name implies. “Volcanic ash is basically like clay, so similarly it is very good at removing oils, dirt and debris from the skin. Volcanic ash is mineral rich minerals including sulfur which has antibacterial properties,” says Sejal Shah, MD and founder of Smarter Skin Dermatology in New York City.

Aren't you just insulting all those women that use ash as an ingredient on their own faces as part of their makeup routine?

Mon Apr 30, 2018, 04:21 PM

she said she used the ashes as a "perfect smokey eye" around them.

But you also made clear in your later posts, in a pivot after it was made clear that she did not criticize her looks, that it was more about the fact that it was implied that she'd actually use ashes as makeup. And that is just ewwwww.

What is it about the organ of the eye that is so sacrosanct to you that it cannot be used in a joke? If she said she uses the blood of Syrian refugees dying overseas because of her bosses Muslim ban, for lipstick, would that be taken as being about criticizing her looks so much that you couldn't even move past that and take it more as a metaphoric critique of Trumps policies? Even if she insisted that she looked good in spite of the ingredients?

If you are implying that she should have stuck to SHS's actual lies. Listed them out and gone over them one by one, instead of a general attack on the act of lying itself, I think that would have been good. I'd watch it. But her gig was only so long, and she wanted to roast others as well.

And the tree? Now you are talking about her addressing Kelly Anne Conway. I thought this was about SHS. And that had nothing to do with makeup or appearance. I'm not sure why you brought that up. And the thought of KAC stuck under a fallen tree and not being able to get to CNN for yet another chance to spin her bullshit was a pleasant thought to me.

Physical appearance is stuff that you're born with and things you can't change.

Makeup, as most of us already know, is stuff you buy and slop on your face, hoping to look beautiful.

You can't stitch these two things together because she has no choice in the first instance, but in the second it was entirely her own choice. In Sander's case she wasn't born with Halloween raccoon eyes, it was her own decision to purchase the goth makeup and she troweled it on. She failed makeup 101, which has nothing to do with her BMI.

In my opinion, and I have a right to one last I checked, Wolf's tirade will serve to help Trump and Sanders, not hurt them. It will also give the anti-abortion industry some talking points, which is the last thing we need to give them. What Trump has done is wrong....not because he is a Republican, but because the way he treats people is wrong, period. If we act the same way, even if it is a little less wrong, it is still wrong. As much as I dislike Huckabee Sanders, I really don't know why she didn't walk out of the room the way she was treated. That is my opinion, coming from someone who is probably more liberal than most of the people here if anything. He is vigorously defending a Liar against a Truthful Satirist. A lot of people at DU are chiming in to disagree -- it is a tremendous source of distraction here, and unproductive.

Myohmyohmy, I wonder why.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a 35 year old adult, not a pigtailed schoolgirl, yeah?

Don't even try to excuse her comically amateurish makeup choices. A better argument could be made if you lamented her poor fashion sense because some people are just bad at it. Clearly, she's all that, but as press secretary to the President she makes $172,200 and what we had Saturday night was a grown woman who can certainly afford to (and should) hire a professional stylist to avoid being laughed at for thinking she looks good with her face tarted up like a cartoon Panda.

You are getting a big kick out of trollling people who approve of Michelle Wolf.

The consequences are that people are going to call you out on what you wrote.

They're going directly to the "lookism" argument, suggesting that a backhanded complement about a desired eye shadow effect is an insult to Ms. Sander's personal appearance.
Which suggests to me that as they obviously already find Ms. Sander's looks off-putting, they go directly to "the comments are an attack on her ugliness" rather than a comment about how Ms. Sanders can use her lies to create an effect.

I took the comment as an observation on the effects of the way Ms. Sanders lies constantly for her boss. The criticism was a rather clever play on a commercial ad.

But that may be because I'm a fat, happily grumpy old woman secure enough in my talents and work ethics that I know shallow people should stay in the kiddie pool if they live to be insulted about everything.

Whenever I comment on her looks, I always point out it looks as if she were often hit in the jaw or on the side of her forehead with some form of stick or heavy object as a child, perhaps from one of the psychopathic brothers. My mom has a similar curious dent above her brow line from when her brother hit her hard with a Coke bottle when he was 11 and she was 7, though not as obvious as Ms. Sanders.
And that it's pretty obvious Ms. Sanders stress-eats - and has a staff that doesn't like her very much. And that's usually as far as I go.

Punching up is not the same as punching down. Funny, I remember a time when we used to hold those who spoke truth to power up as admirable people, even if they might not be as couth and politically accommodating as we might want them to be.

And in Ms. Wolf's position at that dinner, I'd probably be just as couth and politically accommodating as she was. I may not agree with all he did, but I certainly do agree President Truman's two major dictates - "The Buck Stops Here" , and "I tell them the Truth, and they think it's Hell"...

Seems the White House Press Corps need to take a good, hard look at what they're doing. They aren't the White House PR firm...

There's a good scene in the 1990s feature film "The Paper" where Robert Duvall plays a salty old editor talking to a younger colleague. He's talking about being with a group of foreign correspondents years past who got metaphorically drunk on their proximity to the more famous and powerful folks they were supposed to be covering.

They head to the most expensive restaurant in Grenoble, France to celebrate on their respective companies' expense accounts. Then a $9,000 check is placed by the waiter. They panic and are scrambling trying to scrape it together, possibly going to Western Union to get money cabled.

"Just when it was getting really embarrassing, this funny looking little old guy calls the maitre'd over," Duvall's character said. "He draws a couple of squiggly lines on a napkin, signed his name, winked at us and that was that. The old guy was Pablo Picasso and that napkin paid our bill."

"I'm not sure I caught the segue way," the younger colleague said.

"Well, the people we cover, we move in their world but it is their world. You can't live like that. You'll never keep up," Duvall replied. "If you try to make this job about the money, you'll be miserable because we don't get the money. Never have, never will."

WH correspondents make more money than some guy at a local paper covering city hall but they're susceptible to the same pitfalls. Powerful people get to know them by name as do people on the street. They think there's more to it than there is.

Both of those groups know those journalists because they want something from them. People on the street want information. Politicos want complicity and p.r.

It's not about the reporter. They're just in the flow of needs and after them, it will be someone else. But their responsibility is to the people, not the powerful.

she is a COMEDIAN hired by the WHCD people to do a ROAST. That's what she did. But now we have to explain jokes to people who don't get them and are therefore offended.

Don't like her material? Fine. Don't watch her again. You have that choice.

Love her material? Fine. Watch her again. You have that choice too.

But it's okay: that's the controversy du jour. That's what people are upset about today. Tomorrow something else will come up, this will be forgotten, and people who need to be offended will have something else to get offended over.

That's the new America.

Also if you hate it because it did not strike you as funny. But to suggest that Wolf was unfairly attacking SHS as a woman when she basically complemented her eye shadow (nice look) is a bit of a stretch. I mean she said the President was a pussy and Paul Ryan had no balls. And Ted Kennedy was a killer. normally those types of remarks would get her the manhater award. The eyeshadow comment was pretty tame even if you think it was an attack on her appearance, and I don't.
