The Democratic mayor of Dallas has strong words in the wake of the shooting at a high school outside Houston.
In it, Mayor Mike Rawlings called on members of Congress to take substantive action to stop mass shootings and said history will not look kindly upon those elected officials who failed to act in the face of repeated mass murders of our children.
He added: Spare us your thoughts and prayers and do your job.

(51,638 posts)I read on DU that the urban areas in Texas are Dems but it is the rural areas that are GOP voters. It is usually urban vs. rural in most states and especially along the coasts.

(30,773 posts)We are making inroads. Many people who have been sitting on their hands for a long time are now scared and angry. They are turning out as activists.
I can remember going years and years, trying to get people to vote in primaries and local elections. They stared at me with their bare faces hanging out, even though I knew many of them were Democrats. Now they are joining all sorts of grassroots organizations. Suddenly, they know more than the skeleton crew of Democrats who kept the lights on for years and years.

(6,476 posts)...but watch Mike Rawlings-he is in his last term as Mayor and is widely respected and has strong ties to the Business and Social communities in Dallas-he might be a Democrat that would have a chance of winning a statewide race.

(54,447 posts)I actually had a half hour phone call with Collin Allred when I was in Dallas in April. He called my office number, and happened to get me on one of the ten days a year I'm actually there. He was looking for money for his campaign, and he had no idea I would have sent him some even if he hadn't called. But, of course, he isn't yet a member of Congress, so I ended up giving HIM some pointers (!!LOL) about if and when he gets there. He has a tough nut to crack. Ever since Tom DeLay gerrymandered Martin Frost out of his seat (13 terms as our Congressman!) and the loathsome Pete Sessions got in, we have had as good as no representation in Congress from our district. Our district now contains our sliver of the city of Dallas plus a lot of Bible thumpers outside of town

Martin was sort of lost for while after losing his seat in Congress, but the cruelest blow was when cancer took his wife.

(55,445 posts)It's just one of those overused appropriate-sounding phrases people say to feel like they're doing something... Words without intention and subsequent action are just noise...
1. It wouldn't be quite so condescending and insulting if we thought for a minute that our elected officials ever, you know, actually PRAYED OR THOUGHT...
2. These same elected officials are, at the behest of the NRA, going to vote to further erode any semblance of sensible gun legislation sometime next week...
And as an aside, Trump really needs to stop fucking adding "God bless" in his tweets... At this point he's saying it more often than the Pope does, and it would ring hollow even if Trump WAS a devout and active practitioner...

The idea that a person cannot be elected to nationwide office - unless they lie about how much they loves them some Jebus - ESPECIALLY when damn near everyone with an above room temperature IQ KNOWS they are lying; needs to go too.
In a country where politicians feel comfortable saying they are keeping victims in their "thoughts and prayers" and NOT be run out of office on a rail, we get what we collectively deserve....NOTHING.
There won't be any more change this time than the last dozen times...I mean seriously, when 20 kids under the age of 7 were gunned down in Newtown and nothing happened, the soul of this nation died...nothing since has staunched the rot, and today won't either. Nothing will change as long as hypocrisy is rewarded and truth punished in this now full-on shit hole country. Nothing...
