As long as a single wealthy (foreign) corporation/donor can finance an entire national political campaign, we will be dominated by politicians who answer to wealthy foreign masters. Trump will be followed by someone else's hired puppet. These special interests will have no interest in keeping the U.S. economy healthy, no interest in what happens to US voters. They will only demand a cash return on their investment.
We are fucked from now until the end of forever, unless the Supreme Court overturns that piece of shit ruling. And since the President and Congress who select SCOTUS justices depend upon Citizens United to make a whole lot of money, that will never happen. So, we are fucked. Period. What? You think the asshats on the Court who thought Citizens United was a good idea are going to change their minds now that they have seen the results? Don't let them shit you. They always knew what was going to happen. This was all part of the New Federalist plan.

(6,017 posts)Unlike any other non-profits they don't have to provide the IRS with any financial reporting. No documentation of money in, money out, and the GOP has made themselves virtually indivisible with conservative Christianity.

(243 posts)Until this country comes to terms with the 1 percent, we will be subservient to their whims and desires. It took the Swedes in the 1930's to create a national movement to get rid of them. Once they got rid of the 1 percent their economy took off and benefited virtually everyone. As of now, the 1 percent in the US control circa 33 trillion dollars. Do they invest in the country by building schools, hospitals, bridges, living wages, universal health care etc. etc? No, they just sock it away in an offshore account and let it sit. They are the true parasites of this country.

(28,151 posts)didn't have to spend a large part of each and every day raising money.
I marvel at the ridiculous objections DU puts up to the notion that would be a solution to the root of our problems, money in politics. Wow.
On edit: I have to add that as this sinks in seriously, think of it. If our pols weren't beholden to largest donors and fearful of interests that could fund ruinous attack ads we could cut back so much of the wasteful spending. Additionally the tax rates could be properly addressed. All sorts of things could be actually, with all the time legislators would have now that they aren't always fundraising.
Instead of subsidizing Big Oil we could invest in wind and solar. Eventually we wouldn't need nearly the oil we do now and we'd be saving the environment. In turn what interest would we have any longer in oil rich middle east? We could send them shipments of cash to rebuild where we've bombed and still save countless amounts of money by scaling back the military spending by ending operations there.
The list could be practically endless to the way things could drastically improve. I'd rather my tax dollars fund both sides of an election than corporate subsidies or the military complex.
