(6,709 posts)I recently had to do the same thing, also with a 16-yr-old friend...what a hole she left, in the house, in my ears, in my heart. But the time we had made it worth it, even so.
Peace to you all.

(24,128 posts)I've had to do that four times, the last two of which were over a period of three and a half years. It never gets any easier. A wise friend of mine once said that he thought the cruelest thing God ever did to humans was to make the life of the dog so short.
Lucky dog to have you and your wife adopt him though. I'm sure you gave him a wonderful home and life.

(15,552 posts)Every day I look at my girl and see the inevitable coming. She's almost 16 and is a larger dog, so has already lived longer than I ever expected her to. Still, it's going to be tough. She has been with me through some pretty awful lows in my life.

(58,785 posts)so we know. I still see our Emily at night, who had a routine of visiting me briefly when I went to bed, walking up the mattress with her tail straight up to touch noses, and then leaving. Her own bedtime was later, and then she'd come and curl up on the top of one of our pillows, and obstinately between us in winter, no matter the hazards. Jack, always somewhat feral and nervous around people but touchingly choosing to nap on my desk as I worked and following us around like a puppy dog whenever we returned from being away even briefly. And the other loved ones.

(6,556 posts)I have had pets my entire life who have enriched my life with their presence. Each time the ultimate decision has to be made, I cry and am heartsick. However, the good memories help to heal grief and that in turn paves the way to future pet relationships. I hope it will be the same for you.

(9,426 posts)Remember all the good times throughout those 16 years. He was a lucky guy, he was a member of a loving family. Too bad all animals are not this lucky. Stay strong, it really is sad to say goodbye. The only bad part of having a pet is that the end comes way too soon. Handsome little fellow, isn't he?
anneboleyn
(5,611 posts)many times over. That pic shows that very clearly that bright and spirited-looking good boy knows that he is cherished (such a great picture of him), and that you made his life a life of happiness filled with people who petted him, cared for him, and spoke to him with love instead of indifference or worse. You let him sleep happily by his humans, and you rescued him from circumstances that could have ended in a very different way for him. You gave him food he loved to eat and a warm place to sleep and feel safe.
I can see in this picture that he knew all of that and that he loved his life with you.
I know the loss is terrible; I am so sorry for your loss. Please remember the love you gave him, which showed him the beauty of the world and the goodness we humans can show when we choose to be our best selves. And remember the love he gave you with every breath, every wag, every happy shiver when you gave him a good petting or tummy scratch or pat on the head.
