From the article:
..........The LGBT teenager had the right to wear gender nonconforming clothing to her prom, and to bring a date of any gender she preferred. Her choices are a form of expression protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
But like many before her, she was told she couldnt do either........

(58,785 posts)but regulations, and just sometimes literally worrying about being fired 3 years before securing the pension, sometimes don't allow it. In all these situations there are both stern, righteous disapproval and regretful sympathy. Actual hate's there among some in the community but it isn't as dominant as some imagine.
Of course, that's a very good thing. For us and for progress.

(58,785 posts)The pace of humanity's advance has increased from almost not at all for 20,000 years to like a rocket taking off since the Industrial Revolution. That's a serious load of anxiety for people whose ingrained nature is to fear and resist change.
When SCOTUS imposed marriage rights on the nation, most here cheered. I hipped a bit also, but worried even more. Most talk about 2016 is about racism, but we lost by a razor-thin margin, and it's impossible to believe that without that SCOTUS decision we wouldn't have President Clinton, A Democrat-controlled senate, at worst a fairly evenly divided house, and many state legislatures and governors.
That huge usurpation of the right of the people of red states to choose for themselves caused angry reaction among conservatives in all of them. Sadly, many conservatives had comes to support gay marriage, and even more to not oppose it, but having it forced on them from without reinforced all their notions about the evils of big government and out-of-control liberalism.
And so, here we are. The costs and reactions to imposing equality continue.
