Betsy DeVos Stirs Uproar By Saying Schools Can Call ICE On Undocumented Kids
The education secretary said its a local decision, but she didnt argue against it.
By Rebecca Klein
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos provoked an outcry Tuesday when she said schools can choose to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement on potentially undocumented students.
I think thats a school decision, its a local community decision, DeVos told the House Education and the Workforce Committee. I refer to the fact that we have laws and we also are compassionate. I urge this body to do its job and address and clarify where there is confusion around this.
DeVos was responding to a question from Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) about whether she thinks school leaders should call ICE on students or their parents.
Advocacy groups immediately protested her answer, pointing out that under the Supreme Court case Plyler v. Doe, all children ― undocumented or not ― are entitled to a free public education. Some demanded that DeVos issue an immediate clarification in light of this fact.

The American Civil Liberties Union also blasted DeVos comments at the hearing.
Lets be clear: Any school that reports a child to ICE would violate the Constitution. The Supreme Court has made clear that every child in America has a right to a basic education, regardless of immigration status. Secretary DeVos is once again wrong, said Lorella Praeli, director of immigration policy and campaigns for the ACLU, in a statement.

(51,593 posts)has declared that the schools are a safe zone and no one can come onto the school site. It is in the top 10 largest in the country and in Southern CA and there are a lot of people who are relieved they can teach and learn in peace. School is ending soon and their own homes and neighborhoods aren't as safe as the school is.
DeVos is as evil as her Blackwater brother Eric Prince. I wish the worst for both of them.

(14,967 posts)It is one thing to say you disagree with a Supreme Court ruling, or a law passed by Congress, or an executive order or regulation. It is another thing entirely to blatantly mis-state what the status of a ruling/law/regulation is.
Her statement is akin to a "pro-life" person declaring that abortion is entirely illegal, or that cities and states can make abortion entirely illegal. Nope. Don't mistake your wishes for reality.
