This White House is more interested in controlling the news cycle than in nuclear diplomacy. And its showing.
Virtually every step of the way, from the moment when Donald Trump surprised even his own staff by announcing a summit with North Korea, it was obvious, I mean achingly obvious, that the president had no idea what we he was doing. You hear that laughter? Its the world, and theyre not laughing at Princess Beatrices hat.
Lets retrace. Its the evening of Thursday, March 8an otherwise normal day in Trumpland, in what has become of the United States. The administration was scrambling to stave off a ballooning crisis that it created by announcing steel and aluminum tariffs with nearly zero forethought and actual preparation. Theyd caught most people totally off guard, including a good number of Republicans who were saying, Hey, wait a minute here, are we sure this is a good thing?
On that day, The New York Times reported: More than 100 Republican lawmakers implored President Trump to drop his plans for stiff and sweeping steel and aluminum tariffs as the White House prepared to formalize the measures on Thursday afternoon. Thats when the administration started to backtrack and say, well, maybe we can find a way to carve out some exemptions for certain countries after all.

I don't think it says anything good about our system of government that he was even allowed to take office much less remain there.
Most days I feel as if America is fearfully clinging to the idea of how the system should work to rid itself of such a petty little tyrant without fully grasping that Trump is a petty little tyrant that will never - ever - stop being exactly what he is - he will only continue to become more and more the tyrant as people cling to the hope that "the system" will work.
Trump is a attacking and tearing down the very intuitions - the very system - people are pinning their hopes on to stop him.
I'm not saying to abandon the system, but I am saying that system was strongest before he was in office and in his early days. Each day he is in office, the harder it will be to get rid of him using the system.
Yeah, I have hopes, too, for the Mueller investigations - but if those investigations don't get rid of Trump, Pence, and the rest - we'll still be in the same boat. A short breather before the next Bush-league, Trump-esque president comes along. Each time they get away with their crimes, it paves the way for something worse.
There has to be a definitive reckoning for what they have done and are doing, regardless of who it upsets - because Trump's crimes and the criminals actions of those around him must be laid bare and they must be punished.
Hoping to keep good will with a tyrant is stupid thinking. Hoping to keep good will with those who support a tyrant is stupid thinking.
You can't keep placating the ignorance of Trump voters and hope they stop listening to Fox or Rush or Alex Jones. Sure, they have the right to their ignorance but giving that ignorance equal footing with facts and science and the good of the country is dangerous.
I'm ranting. I'll get over it.
Maybe.

(17,426 posts)It's a lot of other things also.
Greed, playing on fears, lack of a fairness doctrine, poor education, the fact that it is just easier to hate, nationwide gullibility, and the frog in a pot of boiling water syndrome.
I believe that the country is in the throes of a civil war right now. It's not a hot war yet, but it won't take much to get there.
