Speaker who can stand up to trump and bring him down.
I am not sure if Nancy Pelosi can do that.
I am not anti Pelosi just that I want to make sure that we get tough with trump.

(10,476 posts)The Constitution does not specify that it must be a member, but it has been done so ever since that it may as well be law. The uproar of putting someone unelected into a position that is 2nd in line for the presidency would be brutal.

(118,659 posts)that women are the voters who will decide the midterms. So they try and destroy Dems' strongest female totem.

(51,593 posts)She is smart and knows what she is doing. Impeachment as an issue would be playing into the GOP's hands for the midterms. She wants to focus on Dem issues as a whole party. Impeachment would push middle of the road voters to stay home or vote GOP. 58% of Americans want Mueller's investigation to go forward and that number keeps growing. She wants Dems to focus on healthcare, taxes, infrastructure, and things that will improve people's lives.

Okay, that may be an exaggeration. But when the Republican Party spends so much of its time talking about her, you'd think she'd be a bit more perturbed. And there's no sign she is.
She has good reason. We just saw yet another election in which Republicans tried everything they could do to tie the Democratic candidate to Pelosi, and he won anyway. Conor Lamb, the victor in that Pennsylvania special election, said at the campaign's outset that he wouldn't be voting for Pelosi for speaker in 2019 if he were elected, since he thought the time had come for a new generation to take control (Pelosi, who's 77, has been in Congress for over 30 years). That might not have made Pelosi feel good, but she's as hard-headed as they come, and if it helped win a seat for Democrats, she wasn't going to complain.
But we don't know whether it actually did help. Perhaps Lamb's stance defused the attack (though it certainly didn't stop Republicans from making it), or perhaps when people are voting for their member of Congress, they don't much care who the party's leader is.
That sounds like a radical thing to say, but the truth is that we have zero evidence that it actually changes any votes when every Republican candidate shouts "My opponent is just a puppet of San Francisco liberal Nancy Pelosi!" There's no question that Republican voters dislike her, but that's very different from her actually having an effect on the outcome of any race. But we've been seeing those ads for so long we just assume they must make a difference

There's NO ONE In the House who can best her. No one. She's accomplished, cunning and experienced. You can't beat that.
Let me repeat: there is NO ONE IN THE HOUSE who could do the job better. No One. And that's what we need.

But that doesnt fit the way a bunch of people want this board to run.

(11,738 posts)Nancy Pelosi is super effective at organizing the Democratic Caucus and even getting some Republicans to move on legislation. If you are only considering belligerence and partisan fighting as necessary qualities in the House Leader, then you are setting the government up for failure.
The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans do not care about governing. They only care about power. They legislate in ways that solidify their power but does nothing to help the people. Democrats believe in the force of government to be of help to people. Focusing on "standing up to Trump and bringing him down" would be a waste of time.
The investigation into his many unethical and likely illegal activities must continue and if they have the proof, the Democrats must not shy away from holding Trump to account. However, the job of the House is to write laws that improve the lives of the American people, to keep an eye on where our money goes. Nancy Pelosi is the perfect Democratic House leader for those actual purposes in the house.
Perhaps her second in command can be the attack dog, that is the job that is usually assigned to the Whip.
dawg
(10,624 posts)Unless the Republicans decide they want Trump gone, we aren't going to impeach Trump and remove him from office. I'm sorry if you've got your hopes pinned on that. It's not going to happen.
But if we retake the House, Democrats can halt the Republican agenda of tax cuts for the wealthy and benefit cuts for the middle-class. We can also use our subpoena power to make Trump's Presidency as miserable as possible, while shining the light of discovery into all the dark little corners of his administration. And Pelosi would be a great speaker to preside over such a process.
