2 NJ police officers reassigned, investigation launched in case of woman punched on beach by police

Two Wildwood, New Jersey police officers have been reassigned to desk duty and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding a Memorial Day weekend incident captured on video showing police punching a woman on the beach, the city's police department said.

The scene on the beach at Wildwood got nasty Saturday afternoon when two police officers wrestled a woman on the ground, one of them wrapping his arm around her neck and punching her in the head, a video posted on Twitter with more than a million views shows.

"Stop resisting," voices call out to the woman, as a baby wails and the woman repeatedly screams: "You're not allowed to hit me and choke me like that!" and "I didn't do anything wrong."

The woman, who identified herself in a Facebook post as Emily Weinman from Philadelphia, said the officers approached her and a friend and asked them their age.

In the Facebook post, Weinman admitted having beer but said that she hadn't drunk any. When the officers conducted a Breathalyzer test on her, it came back negative, she said in the Facebook post.

Public records indicate Weinman is 20.

When the police continued to hang around, she says, she asked them why they didn't have anything better to do, to which one cop responded that he hadn't planned to write her up but now he was going to do so. She said she didn't want to give him her name, adding that she had her 18-month-old daughter with her. The altercation escalated after she tripped and fell, which is when she said the cops tackled her.

3 police officers can't manage to deal with a potentially underage drinking young woman without violence?

First of all whatever happened that resulted in the groin kick needs to be addressed. It seems to me you ought to be able to address a potential underage drinker like that as follows:

1). Check the ID. Under 20? OK.
2). Do the breathylizer. Negative? OK. Gee your child is a cutie!
3). Do you mind if we dump the beer that's in your posession. OK? What wonderful weather we are having!

4). OK thanks m'amm! Have a great day!

They've either hired the wrong people or they train really poorly.

Ugh!

Less intensive training, etc. Not justifying it but it's some of the reason why.

...we have a house down the Jersey shore in another town but it is the same situation. The force gets doubled (at least) over the summer and most of them are cops that can't find regular work for whatever reason.

That being said, it's not like this type of behavior doesn't also happen with "regular duty" officers as well. All too frequently in fact.

They're trying to set up a defense based on the subject resisting arrest.

And even if the video shows no resistance on the part of the subject, the cops still get a paid vacation (or in this case, desk duty) and eventual exoneration...

at the point I heard the "stop resisting" shouts in the tape, she was kicking pretty violently. (Not without good reason, but if it was my friend, for her own safety, I'd want her to try to avoid giving them any excuse for further violent behavior.

Namely: the county lockup for two to five for aggravated assault.
