(108,978 posts)Palestinians have a point of view that people should consider, too.
And their point of view is that they had been living in Palestine for hundreds of years when, after the war, Europeans decided they should create a state of Israel in the Middle East. But the Jewish people they wanted to move there had, by and large, been living in Europe for generations.
I had a wonderful high school teacher who was Jewish. He invited both Jewish and Palestinian speakers to come to the class, and offer their differing views on Israel. That's when I first realized how complicated the situation was and that both sides had good reasons for their points of view.

(135,834 posts)The MSNBC host released a new statement on Friday, "apologizing again" for her past writing, and the network backed her up.
MSNBC is backing Joy Reid, even as more of her controversial, offensive blog posts have been resurfaced.
The cable network issued a statement of support for Joy Reid on Friday, coupled with a new apology from the host about her past blog posts. However, she did not take ownership of a new set of posts allegedly written by her more than a decade ago.
"Some of the things written by Joy on her old blog are obviously hateful and hurtful," the network said Friday. "They are not reflective of the colleague and friend we have known at MSNBC for the past seven years. Joy has apologized publicly and privately and said she has grown and evolved in the many years since, and we know this to be true."

(24,122 posts)but, not a reason to force her to resign like some have advocated.
I'm not sure how to interpret her request to judge her by the "totality of her work." That phrase has merit. However, lately it seems I hear it used to suggest we ignore the past. Problem for me is when that past reveals so many issues I have trouble accepting a simple assertion of change. It's hard when I just see these folks on TV. I don't know them any other way.

(4,429 posts)what would have happened. What if she just told the truth from the beginning. Would she have been fired?
I think there has to be space for people to change/evolve and do that in a public space. I worry that people feel backed into a corner - if they tell the truth, their career is over - if they lie, well, we'll catch it eventually - and that will end their career.
I agree it's a shame. But I think it's also about us (as a society) and how we come to understand people who make mistakes, are fallible, or even some who have to learn the 'hard' way. How do we allow that and remain committed to integrity?

Same as it ever was!!!
No I haven't seen the latest and fuck it, she apologized and look at her life recently. Who exactly would benefit from the takedown of Joy Reid, huh?????????????????????????????????????????????
After Trump, Pence, Ted Nugent, Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity etc (ALL WHITE, ALL MALE, gee what a coincidence huh? ) are forced off the air and out of public life THEN you can go after Joy Ann Reid!!!!
IMO!

But if you are a democrat(especially a woman and double for a black woman!) your entire life from birth to date better be as pure as the driven snow or you will be shamed and silenced by your own allies much less the fucking GOP!

(445 posts)before you get past it? She's been apologizing and apologizing. Currently she's a strong advocate for minority rights and has been out there hammering on Republicans. So stop shooting down people trying to push a progressive agenda. Grow up and realize people can evolve, learn, and mature.

(3,122 posts)And the majority of Jews throughout the world probably agree that the international community needs to stand up to the Israeli government.
The present RW administration in Israel does not represent our Jewish populations in North America and Europe... and people should quit trying to equate the two. (Just as Trump likes to equate all Latino immigrants with the M13 street gang).
Like the US Administration, the Israeli government is now in a very dark place.

(14,971 posts)Her apology comes less than a day after Buzzfeed News unearthed an October 2007 post from the news host's old blog, The Reid Report, in which she apparently satirized McCain's promise, during the 2007 presidential campaign, to follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell.
At the end of the post, there's an image of Seung-Hui Cho, who killed himself after an April 2007 shooting rampage at Virginia Tech that left 32 dead and 17 wounded, with McCain's face photoshopped atop Cho's body.

(9,895 posts)I don't care if Joy Reid is guilty as sin in her past of writing things that may look bad upon reflection a decade later....Christ, I pop off and say things off the cuff that I am embarrassed by 10 MINUTES later, OFTEN! The fact is unless she is actively holding positions that are discriminatory or defamatory NOW and continuing to do so, then it is time to develop the GOP blind eye here people...
EVERYONE says stupid things in their lives...many times we are ignorant and need to better educate ourselves on issues and we speak out when we should probably listen...but unless someone is currently a bad person and impervious to change or actively seeking to hurt or oppress others, we cannot keep acquiescing to right wing demands for false equivalency blood...
FUCK them, they can learn to live with disappointment as I have for the last 40 years. We do not need to actively participate in GOP-centric mob mentality any longer...
Joy, I got you back...unless you wrote these things AFTER you initially apologized for discretionary lapses of judgment, then you keep on doing you and damn the critics and enablers!!!

(14,574 posts)Let's all leave Joy alone.
We've got bigger fish to fry, let me tell you...
Giant tax cut for billionaires -> Bloated $2 trillion deficit -> substantial raising of interest rates -> decreased money supply -> decreased demand for goods and services -> layoffs.
Concurrently:
Ill-conceived trade war -> dramatically decreased sales of American crops and other products, substantially hurting farmers -> higher prices on virtually all consumer goods.
Concurrently:
Trump's 'America First' policy -> weak dollar -> much higher gasoline prices.
Concurrently:
Trump's immigration-hate policies -> ICE with far too much power and too little accountability, acting like the Gestapo -> children ripped from their parents at the border.
Concurrently:
Trump enriching himself and family through misuse of his presidential powers.
Concurrently:
Taking us out of the Iran nuclear deal further destabilizes the region, compounded by other stupid policies surrounding Iraq, Libya and Syria.
Concurrently...you get the picture.
Oh, and let's not forget the GIANT and pervasive risk of Russian hacking into power grid, finance houses, government, voter rolls - you name it, cozy Bear is cozying right up to it.
Joy Reid wrote some dumb stuff a few years ago...la de dah - she's apologized. Now, let's move on.
Seriously, let's get with the program and focus on flipping as many elected offices as humanly possible over to D in November.

This is like what the third release of material from a long defunct blog? It's an evil scheme but it has hooked some people here. All we can do is to speak up in support of her as often as possible.
