The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee sounds like he wants to wind down its probe this year. No matter what context you put that in, thats a terrible idea.

I first got wind of this from a Bloomberg report Wednesday afternoon that carried the ominous and extremely unsettling headline: Russia Probes Wouldnt Expand If Democrats Win Congress, Warner Says.
Uh what? The top Senate Democrat on the Russia investigation actually said in effect that the Democrats, if they captured the Senate this November, wouldnt even continue the probe once they took over? The write-up also quoted Warner directly as seeming to equate partisan pressures on the committee from left and right, and expressing the view that Americans will be tired of it if this is not wound down in this calendar year.

To promise not to investigate this president into the next calendar year because the people will be tired of it is to promise not to perform the duty of protecting the Constitution. Warner, like every senator, took an oath of office that begins: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic... [my italics].
We can begin to see now where this is headed. Mueller will indeed, its my guess, work into next year, perhaps well into next year; he looks like he has lots of rocks still to turn over (will Warner criticize him for going on too long?). He will issue a report that may not call for indicting a sitting president but that could well be sweeping and devastating in all kinds of ways. If its illegal and this crowd didnt do it, its only because they didnt think of it or didnt have the time.
At that point will commence a ferocious pushback campaign to destroy Mueller, his team, his findings, everything. You say thats already started? It has, but next year its going to be like nothing weve seen so far.
Thats when Warner and his colleagues, the Republican ones especially, are going to have to take a stand in defense of the law. I think we know how much we ought to count on the Republicans. That will put all the more weight on the shoulders of the Democrats, especially the one who might be chairing the most relevant Senate committee. Protecting the Constitution takes as long as it takes, whether people tire of it or not.

(42,641 posts)we do not want to investigate the Bush/Cheney cabal for lying the country into 2 wars. It is important to look forward.
Forward-lookism in action. Ignoring illegality in the name of bipartisanship.

(7,725 posts)Pres Obama had to watch his P's and Q's bc he was black. Let's face it. That put him at a distinct disadvantage w right wing racist nut jobs. He was trying to set a tone as well I think. Note the tone DEAF dt who utters Obamas name every time he feels ugly.
Ever wonder if Pres Obama...Hillary...etc ever read Democratic underground while they're home at night having a drink?
NAH. They're all done with this ungrateful country. How much can individual human beings take? They really won in this moment bc they're doing what they want and living their life. Gop can PAY people to antagonize even when they're having their morning Bloody Mary.

Seems as if there is nobody who cares are is willing to step up to the plate to protect our Democracy.
They go low, that guy Trump lowers the bar every day, there is no more gotten of the barrel it got broken when the glass ceiling was left intact.
They go low and we all get dragged down into Putins demise of our country.
Obama and Hillary are now sidelined players. There or no guideposts, curbs or any leaders to show us the way
There is nobody, not one person to takes us high

(7,725 posts)We ask Atlas size things of a handful of people...then get shitty two seconds after something is in the news. I'm Pretty sure Mr Warner isn't going down in flames on this. Maybe...he knows something we don't? Expect as much from yourselves (ourselves) as we do our road weary representatives.

(7,725 posts)signature line here said something from a chinese proverb...'to combat evil...triple down on goodness, quickly'...something like that. Seems very appropriate.
How do we know what's going on? Mr Warner has been stalwart.

(7,888 posts)is he a vulnerable Dem looking to exit as a coward stage right? Could it be we need to exercise our power at the ballot box? Not to elect a liberal that can't win in Virginia, but one that can do both, win and represent our interests. I can't vote in this state so will say no more. more imo
Any people anywhere being inclined and having the power have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and force a new one that suits them better.

(57,099 posts)with his regime versus tire people into apathy. One things for sure is we can't fix anything without as Democratic a Congress as possible.
I think Mueller is the kind of lawyer who allows people to convict themselves and turn. I wonder when not if Manafort turns. Before, during or after his trial or conviction?
I certainly wished we could have held the elections around a month ago.
