and that was heinous.
Why is it worse? For one thing, cops are the murderers, for another the Police Chief is covering it up. And the details are stunning:
- According to Carter's mother, her son was left handed and yet the fatal wound was to the right temple:
"Teresa Carter, Chavis Carters mother, told reporters that she believes the police killed Carter and are now attempting to cover it up. She said her son suffered a wound to his right temple, though he was left-handed. And just minutes earlier during the traffic stop, according to Teresa Carter, her son had called his girlfriend and told her hed call later from jail."

-Carter was with two others- both white. They were not taken into custody.
http://thegrio.com/2012/08/02/chavis-carter-case-officers-released-2-others-before-alleged-suicide/
- Carter was handcuffed with his hands behind his back.
- The fuckwad police claim he was searched twice.
- The police report states that Officers Baggett and Marsh (the arresting on scene pigs- and I don't use that word lightly) were out of the car when Carter purportedly shot himself. They returned to the car and found him shot and covered in blood with HIS HANDS STILL CUFFED BEHIND HIS BACK.
The FBI better fucking nail these fuckers- and that includes the pig police chief.

(33,956 posts)I wouldn't want to minimize either situation--but both are horrendous in their own respective way.

(114,904 posts)the police are charged with upholding the law. That in and of itself makes it more heinous
And yes, of course there's a vital need for justice in both cases, but I stand by- and explained- exactly why Carter's case is even worse.

(27,461 posts)there are the questions about how could this happen, and then there is the question, why was he there in the first place?
Eric had just turned 18:
Mr. Perez suffered a medical emergency while being held at a detention center in Florida. Despite vomiting and crying for help, Mr. Perez was left to suffer for over six hours before receiving medical attention. Tragically, by the time he was seen by emergency personnel, it was too late. So what was Mr. Perez doing in a detention center to begin with? The non-violent act of possessing a small amount of marijuana.

(22,143 posts)Handcuffed in the back of the car, it makes no sense. You could shoot him in the back and say he was running away. You could shoot him in the chest and say he was attacking you. You could plant a weapon on him to justify. Why the fuck would you execute him, hands cuffed, in the back of a squad car?
I'm not saying that isn't what happened because it very well may have. I'm saying you'd have to be either incredibly stupid or incredibly arrogant to do it like this.

(114,904 posts)not to mention racist. It's impossible that this kid killed himself. And it appears no one else but the cops had access to him.

(37,573 posts)Sitting here, I can grab my right wrist with my left hand, and I can then twist myself, point my index finger like it is a gun, lean my head over a little bit and have that finger about 3 inches from my right temple. And sure, I am left-handed, but I can easily shoot a gun with my right hand, if it turns out that's the hand I can get to the gun with.
Well, at least I imagine I can. I have never actually shot a gun with either hand. Okay, maybe a cap gun and one that shoots little plastic disks that my friend had, and a water gun.

(3,860 posts)1. They were so confident they would get away with it without a serious investigation that they didn't care how it looked. Force of habit.
2. They were trying to terrorize him with a gun to his head when it went off unexpectedly, and then tried to cover it up with the first alibi they could think of. A Pulp Fiction scenario without Mr. Wolf.

This is bad all around.

(37,573 posts)That one, or both, of the cops just decided, 'hey, let's murder a black guy tonight".
Who would be stupid enough to think they could get away with that? Why would somebody not expect an investigation and some press attention? Why would any rational person want to subject themself to that.
Of course, expecting people to behave rationally is probably a really bad assumption.
But neither is it reasonable to just assume somebody is a crazed psychotic just because they were in a strange incident.
The suicide explanation is not the real explanation. The report says "self inflicted". One possible scenario is 1. Carter had a gun, perhaps hidden in his pants that he then hid in the patrol car while he was uncuffed. 2. when he later was cuffed and put back into the partol car, he twisted around and grabbed the gun, intending to use it to escape somehow. 3. while he was twisting around, he accidentally fired the gun, shooting himself in the head. Kinda far-fetched, but somewhat plausible. Strange accidents sometimes happen and it is logical for somebody to want to avoid arrest and prison time for drug dealing.
Otherwise what is the motive?
Hate?
Oh come on. There are other ways to release your hate.
Orders from the chief to send a message to drug dealers?
Maybe somebody saw too many previews of the latest Dennis Quaid movie, with the tough vigilante cop?
Then why is the chief seemingly going along with it?

Frankly, I think Poll Blind's thread on this subject gave you a valid scenario. And, there's forensic evidence on this case that will either back the cops, or not.
Further, the reason his two companions were not taken into custody was because they hadn't done anything wrong.
Mr. Chavis gave a fake name, had warrants and pot.
