I love little cultural differences, like how Americans are super offended by the word cunt but here in Australia we're super offended by school children being slaughtered with automatic weapons.

(102,283 posts)to have an excuse to use the "c" word. Would you spell out the "N" word on DU? NO.
You CAN discuss without the gratuitous use of the specific gender slur. That is, if that were not your INTENT.
Your post has a good contrast to make had you been more mindful....

(4,483 posts)A fairly new poster was, after all, quoting someone else--I'm guessing he/she didn't know how to format it so that that was obvious. I do not write or say the N word because it offends and sickens me. I appreciate posters who use n****r or something so I don't have to look at the word. "Cunt," however--really? It's better to write c*nt? Maybe I'm wrong, but I see a world of difference between the two terms. Maybe because I'm personally offended when people post f*ck--what's the difference between thinking it and writing it? I think even if you're hardline on "cunt" you might give this post a pass because the word itself is so relevant to what's going on. It's not like OP picked it out of thin air.
And I don't understand how the poster could have presented the point without some reference to "cunt," or if you prefer, "c*nt."

(102,283 posts)Harsh? In the past it would have gotten the poster a jury hide. So a warning is NOT harsh.

(102,283 posts)is to show sheer contempt for all the women who have had that ugly slur used against them to derail their careers and diminish them as women, as people. No less than if someone came here and did so with the "N" word. Would you defend THAT? Tone, indeed. It is common decency. No one is saying it can't be discussed, but spelling it out without even using quotes, is gratuitous and contemptuous. And your defending such is, at best questionable as well. Tone, indeed.

(4,483 posts)Aggressive, hurtful, non-helpful, turns off the person addressed so they won't hear your worthwhile point. That's what I meant by your tone. It would have been easy, especially considering that the person you're responding to has something like 200 posts, for you to correct him/her in a courteous way that might have made him/her consider his/her use of the term. My argument isn't with what you said; it's with the unnecessary anger you showed. We are all on the same side here.
My personal concerns with c*nt vs cunt are another issue, and not what I was really meaning to address.

(102,283 posts)spelling. That YOU believe it just fine to do so with this, the most despicable of slurs toward WOMEN says everything. Despicable doesn't believe to cover it.
In the past such would have earned a jury hide. I did not alert, I warned and I explained why this is a problem, though to come to a new site and DIRECTLY post a despicable slur should be self evident as to its inappropriateness.
