Reacting the bombshell report that lawyers for President Donald Trump submitted a 20-page memo to special counsel Robert Mueller claiming that the president cannot be charged with committing obstruction because he has unfettered authority over all federal investigations, GOP strategist Steve Schmidt exploded in anger on Twitter.
According to the New York Times report on Saturday, the letter which was delivered in January asserted Trump can if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon, with regard to the Russia investigation and any other inquiries Muellers office may conduct.
Writing on Twitter, Schmidt called the bold claim a direct assault on our rule of law.
A clear line has been drawn with the release of Trumps legal memo, he wrote. Make no mistake, it is a direct attack on the rule of law and a declaration of absolute power on the part of the President. Its thesis must be attacked relentlessly. The American Republic is worth fighting for.

(16,786 posts)These are fighting words that ring true that America and its Rule of Law is NOT FOR SALE.
Steve Schmidt, though a Republican, is the TRUE patriot here.

(5,523 posts)Finally, even a far right republican realizes how dangerous our dear leader is. Once Trump is deposed, Steve will revert to his normal self, as will many anti-Trumpers on MSNBC and CNN.

In the meantime, thank God he's not the only one we used to fight with speaking up forcefully against Trump. And I value each and every one of them for doing so.

(5,523 posts)But, I try to keep things in perspective. Deep down he's still very right wing. So is Nicolle. Never heard her or Steve admit anything negative about Bush.

(11,885 posts)Steve speaks truth to power, but they have to listen to know what he said. The republican party has now become a group of treasonous cowards, and liars dealing in corruption, and organized criminal activities.

First of all, I think he is full of shit for whatever he was implying, either legal or criminal, but it got me to wondering just how many Americans think the same way... that some mysterious group called they will take care of things before the country goes down the flusher.
Maybe thats why so many idiots dont show up to vote.

This arrogance and abuse of power is rife throughout tRump's entire administration.......

(10,271 posts)Damn. Them's fightin' words.
Bout damn time. Ryan won't care he's OUT. McConnell isn't gonna sweat it till after the general (and then, only if he he loses control of the leadership).
The executive isn't gonna reign itself in (other than the justice department and we shouldn't have to consider ourselves lucky there, even tho we sure as hell are and isn't that sad), Congress doesn't give 2 fucks what this animal does, so it's up to the courts...ultimately, I suspect this will be decided by Chief Roberts view of the court as an integral, institutional, and independent Branch, and his opinion of History, and he's been pretty hardcore about so far about The Court not getting walked over; he WILL protect the Courts role as neutral arbiter, I suspect.

(15,286 posts)But there was a slightly humorous misspelling in "The executive isn't gonna reign itself in...". That's exactly what it's trying to do - make itself into a kingdom. I would like to see Trump with some reins and bits, however.
