What You Have Become, Republicans
You used to lay claim to being good Christians who adhered to the teachings of Christ. Now you are the party that cuts funding for programs that feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and care for the sick – refusing to do the very things that Christ admonished you to do in his name.
You used to call yourselves the party of fiscal responsibility. Now you are the party that has plunged the country into unprecedented debt.
You used to identify yourselves as the party of family values. Now you are the party that takes children away from their parents at the border, and warehouse those children like so much irrelevant garbage.
You used to brag about your superior moral rectitude. Now you worship a man who brags about grabbing pussies, refers to black athletes as “sons of bitches”, and has called entire nations “shithole countries”.
You used to champion patriotism. Now you think love of country depends solely on who kneels or who stands during the national anthem at a football game.
You used to pride yourselves on your support for the military. Now you pride yourselves on disrespecting people like John McCain because your draft-dodging “pResident” doesn’t like people who were captured by the enemy, while his own contribution to the war effort was avoiding STDs during the Viet Nam war.
You used to talk about the scourge of corruption in government. Now you support people like Scott Pruitt and Ben Carson, who are literally poster boys for spending taxpayer dollars to serve their own self-serving whims.
You used to demand honesty and truth from the president. Now you defend the lies that your “pResident” tells without question or hesitation.
You used to hold yourselves out as protectors of the hard-working middle-class. Now you promote “tax reform” that increases the financial burden on the middle-class, while the wealthiest Americans get tax cuts.
You used to call for competent people to be appointed to positions of power. Now you accept the most incompetent people running the departments of education, energy, homeland security, the EPA, HUD, and the VA – along with “advisors” whose only qualification is being the daughter or son-in-law of your “pResident”.
You used to rant about the lack of transparency of government officials. Now you rant against those who insist upon it.
I will give Donald Trump credit for one thing, and one thing only. He has – albeit inadvertently – shone a light on the corruption, dishonesty, and ultimate hypocrisy of the Republican party. We always knew you were self-serving liars – and now our long-held suspicions have been confirmed.
Just like the “pResident” you adore, you have no moral compass, no ethics, no sense of self-respect. And just like him, you are devoid of compassion or empathy, and are totally incapable of intelligent thought.
Just like your “pResident”, you believe that disrespecting our traditional allies while praising our nation’s enemies is actually good for the country. Just like your “pResident”, you think that being an ignorant, divisive asshole is somehow a virtue to be admired and emulated.
Just like your “pResident”, you cling to the idea that being an ignorant, ill-informed dumbass is somehow something to be admired.
Allow me to point out the obvious. Your “pResident” represents everything you yourselves allegedly disdained for decades. And now he is the idol you bow before, forsaking all other gods.
Your “pResident” has encouraged division among Americans, just as the Russians who infiltrated our democratic election process hoped he would.
Your “pResident” has done everything in his power to pit one citizen against the other, to sow discord between us and our global allies, to cast doubt on the integrity of those who put their lives on the line in the service of the FBI, the CIA, and Department of Justice.
Everything you have always claimed to be what your party stands for has become everything your party now stands against. Your betrayal of your own much-touted principles was expected. Your betrayal of your country and its citizens is a far more serious offence – and won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
