Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) is calling on the House to remain in session through August.
He's one of a group of of House lawmakers expected to ramp up pressure on leadership to follow the Senate's lead in canceling August recess. Some members are planning on sending a letter to leadership in the lower chamber Wednesday calling for the congressional calendar to be revised.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Tuesday the upper chamber would stay in Washington for the majority of August to complete its work on nominations and appropriations bills.
Gallagher, a freshman member, has long been a supporter of lawmakers remaining in session through the summer, having led the charge to cancel recess in 2017 amidst the threat of a government shutdown.

(51,611 posts)This has a silver lining. In Dec the Dems were sort of afraid to leave for Winter Recess since the fucking moron was getting crazier and they were worried that he might fire Mueller or Rosenstein in their absence. The same applies to Summer Recess. I sort of want them in DC so if he does pull something they will be there already.

(14,974 posts)So McTurtle wants to keep the Senate in session to keep Senators in DC, not back home campaigning. But only 1/3 of the Senate is running for re-election, and those who are happen to be disproportionately Dem this cycle. So impinging on incumbents' campaigning hurts Dems overall...
That's not the case with the House. They're ALL incumbents, and are ALL up for re-election. And they're disproportionately Repubs. So more Repubs are kept from campaigning than Dems. And given that it is a midterm with a Repub POTUS, the Dem incumbents are in the safer starting position. In the case of retirements, of which there are many, the move doesn't hurt, but doesn't help either because all of the candidates for those seats are free to campaign either way.
How does this help Repubs? By pretending that they are serious about working hard?
