We are now almost a year into the contrived battle between President Donald Trump and the NFL over the national anthem, which is easily the most overblown narrative of the Trump administration, if not the country itself. And yet, I surmise that a huge majority of the population still has no idea about what may be the key fact which is driving at least part of the controversy.
I am referring to the reality that Trump has a very clear and deeply intense reason to possess a personal vendetta against the NFL which goes back to the mid-1980s. It was then that Trump, an owner of the New Jersey Generals of the rival USFL spring football league, tried to compete with the NFL and got completely crushed.
Trump, an incredibly insecure narcissistic egomaniac, has always desired to be seen as part of the really rich peoples club, and wanted a way to prove the prodigiousness of his manhood. I believe this is because Trump has never been really very wealthy, and is a guy who dodged the Vietnam War after being forced to go to military school because he was too much of a brat for his parents to put up with.
Owning an NFL football team, especially in the 1980s, would have validated everything Trump fears about himself to be fraudulent (because it is). When his Hail-Mary pass failed, and the USFL went needlessly under thanks almost entirely to Trumps hubris, he was publicly humiliated.
He then led an anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL and won, though his side only received $3. In exchange, Trump would effectively be forever black-balled from the hyper-exclusive club of NFL owners (even if he had the money to buy a football real team, which he didnt then, and he still doesnt now).

(20,851 posts)I think the same writers are just amazed that a group of billionaires are allowing Trump and FOX news to push them around. Particularly since they televise their games on FOX!
The majority of owners likely voted for Trump, support FOX news and love their huge tax cut. They also hate the players union and see this as an issue to weaken the union.
Thus, they seem totally baffled on what to do about the situation. It's killing ratings, but they're winning $$ in other areas of life and they're so married to FOX broadcasting they can't seem to do what is necessary.
My guess is if they wanted to end this story line all they would have to do is threaten or actually tear up the FOX broadcasting contract and put their games on CBS. When the NFL moved to FOX it put FOX on the map. They can just as easy take that away with little pain to the NFL. It would be a huge blow to FOX that needs the NFL to push their new fall line ups. The owners do hold all the cards. Where FOX news goes, there goes Trump. That they haven't pushed back means, A) the hate the union more than this coverage B) they like their tax cuts more than they hate this coverage C) many are blind GOP voters and the idea the GOP has turned on them to score cheap points just hasn't sunk in and may never.

(9,114 posts)he ever said or did, when he's being deposed.
He forgets hundreds of interactions with Russians, from the '90's through today.
But he never forgets a grudge, never forgets a slight, never forgets a loss, or a reality tv style feud.

(11,885 posts)Have set themselves up for more abusive actions from the thug in the oval office now. It won't be long, and all businesses should rethink who they support moving forward , because that's exactly what putin did to businesses in Russia to drain money from them.

(36,444 posts)He wanted to expand the NFL by absorbing the USFL, the only way he could make any serious jingle and gain his desired equal status; being an owner of a USFL team is a 'loser' in his pea brain.
