Trump planning on pardoning at least a dozen people

Was just on CNN. The Tyrant is preparing a list of at least a dozen people he's going to pardon soon.

I freakin hate the pardon power. He's absolutely abusing it for his own personal gain, and Republicans are perfectly ok with it.

I am curious about this; i generally favor the Pardon existing, but using it for political or financial game is obviously wrong.

Should there be more checks on it?

even if he has the unfettered power of pardon, it's still possible that certain uses of a pardon might constitute, or be a part of, a crime, such as bribery or obstruction of justice.

never mind that it could also be an impeachable offense, at least given a congress willing to consider such a thing....

13. The power of the presidential pardon
Wed Jun 6, 2018, 10:40 AM
Jun 2018

(when executed in accordance with the Constitutional language) has been affirmed since 1866.

In ex parte Garland, the Court's opinion included the following (emphasis added)

The power of pardon conferred by the Constitution upon the President is unlimited except in cases of impeachment. It extends to every offence known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment. The power is not subject to legislative control.

So unless the Supreme Court is willing to roll this ruling back and/or a Constitutional Amendment is proposed and ratified, there is little or nothing that either the Judicial or Legislative branches can do.

I did hear that his previously floated set of names displayed a pattern of sending messages to those indicted so far that he'd pardon them. Which causes me to wonder if more names are more of the same, just more wacko attention-grabbing and diversion, or a way of obfuscating the message.

Pardons used to be handed out by the bucketful. Both FDR and Truman averaged around 240 pardons a year during their presidencies. (with FDR giving out over 400 in one year)

Obama was more sparing in his use of the pardon power, but at the end of his presidency he made up for lost time. In December 2016, he granted 78 pardons one day. And a few weeks later, just a couple of days before Trump's inauguration, Obama gave out 60 more pardons.

So I wouldn't recommend making the number of pardons the issue. Rather, the recipients of the pardons should be looked at carefully and if any look dubious, those should be the issue.

of it, if only he'd pardon a serial killer. But this is going to backfire on him anyway.

Traditional conservative ideology may have been purged from the Republican Party, but conservative personality is wired in, and conservatives believe to their bones in the need for punishment to maintain order.

Yes he's signing some laws about letting people try non-fully approved mess and he has a privatizing the VA one ready but even that isn't even funded. His own party is a mess in both houses. He just wants to show that's he's actually done something. Oh and he is stoking his base.

My 2 cents.

Wishful thinking, but perhaps all of these pardons are an indication that Trump may be trying to get everything done as quick as he can in case he needs to resign for "health reasons" (...or perhaps to take care of an "ill" Melania).

And he is likely going to Jail. Make no mistake, dude knows where the bodies are buried.

This could be a tactic to make Mueller consider that Trump could decide to just blow up his entire case by just pardoning everyone if Mueller doesn't go easy on his buddy Paulie "Bones" Manafort.

Watch the dipshit tweet out that he's doing exactly that.
