(7,725 posts)of the world. All that time and integrity our Forefathers put into our prestige and promise. They cheated. We want it all back like it was pre-dt. Nothing else is acceptable. It's been a chain of rip-offs to the American People and the US Treasury.

(66,388 posts)invaded Canada seven times, and got their asses kicked each time.
Three times during the French and Indian War.
Twice during the American Revolution.
Twice during the War of 1812.
Every attempt failed.
So Trump should just STFU...

(22 posts)In 1814, the British (grizzled veterans from the Peninsular War: the King's Own Light, 21st Royal North British Fusiliers, the East Essex Regiment of Foot, and 85th Regiment of Foot) set fire to every government building in Washington, but not the 'White House'.
Why not? Because at that time it was called the 'Executive Mansion'. It was often referred to unofficially as the 'white house' because it had been given a coat of whitewash to seal the stone used in its construction and that was refreshed every few years.
The British did set fire to the 'Executive Mansion', but a storm started the following afternoon, saving the 'Executive Mansion' from total ruin.
It wasn't until 1901 when Theodore Roosevelt had "White House, Washington" engraved on the stationery that the name became official.

(9,865 posts)Canada was part of the Empire back then and still is. It is sort of Britain. And for all we know Canadians were in the invasion force, helping their head of government. Right?
Real question.
I sometimes wonder if we'd be better off without the Revolution. I think slavery would have ended sooner, though that may be wishful thinking, given how much the economies of both Africa and Britain depended on slave labor. But we'd be today a more progressive, educated countrymore like Canada, which is a better country than we are, in terms of the government giving a real damn for its people.

(22 posts)Elements from the Peninsular War that was freed up after the abdication of Napoleon and hurried across the Atlantic to clean up the North American battle with one of Napoleon's allies. The British as the time thought America took advantage of the fact that Britain was tied up with a war against most of Europe under Napoleon, the War Hawks were vociferous and even to canny a thinker as Thomas Jefferson thought that invading Canada was " a mere matter of walking."
Perhaps the Seventeenth Century's equivalent to a cakewalk.
