Trump ACTUALLY ASKED Justin Trudeau if he remembered when Canadians burned down the WH in 1812

(CNN)President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a testy phone call on May 25 over new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration targeting steel and aluminum imports coming from Canada, including one moment during the conversation in which Trump made an erroneous historical reference, sources familiar with the discussion told CNN.

According to the sources, Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a "national security" issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" referring to the War of 1812.

The problem with Trump's comments to Trudeau is that British troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812. Historians note the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that eventually became Canada, which was then a British colony.

There's just this:

When asked if the comment was received as a joke, one source on the call said: "To the degree one can ever take what is said as a joke. The impact on Canada and ultimately on workers in the US won't be a laughing matter."

....and, obviously, Trump didn't know that the British burned the White House.

It shouldn't have made any difference! Trump is talking to one of our strongest allies. He shouldn't say something like this to a world leader unless he checks it out with his advisors first for accuracy.

But, wait...it is even worse. Even if Trump was right about who burned the White House, this was over two hundred frigging years ago!

In the meantime Canada has stood by our side and sacrificed its soldiers for us.

Trump is the security risk to our country, not Canada.

At great risk to their diplomats, Canadians smuggled a number of Americans out of Iran after the militants had taken over the U.S. embassy. Here's the Wikipedia entry:

Would Trump act similarly? I doubt it.

was, at least partly, retaliation for the American invasion of Canada, destruction of private property there, including destruction of Parliament and other government buildings in York.

Old history, but when Trump tries to make this a jab out of ignorance, he fails worse than most would find possible.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, “Operation Overlord”, the long-awaited invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, began with Allied armies from the U.S., Britain and Canada landing on the coast of Normandy. On D-Day, the 3rdCanadian Infantry Division landed on Juno Beach. The Canadian assault troops stormed ashore in the face of fierce opposition from German strongholds and mined beach obstacles. The soldiers raced across the wide-open beaches swept with machine gun fire, and stormed the gun positions. In fierce hand-to-hand fighting, they fought their way into the towns of Bernières, Courseulles and St. Aubin and then advanced inland, securing a critical bridgehead for the allied invasion. The victory was a turning point in World War II and led to the liberation of Europe and the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Fourteen thousand young Canadians stormed Juno Beach on D-Day. Their courage, determination and self-sacrifice were the immediate reasons for the success in those critical hours. The fighting they endured was fierce and frightening. The price they paid was high - the battles for the beachhead cost 340 Canadian lives and another 574 wounded. John Keegan, eminent British historian who wrote Six Armies in Normandy, stated the following concerning the Canadian 3rd Division on D-Day: “At the end of the day, its forward elements stood deeper into France than those of any other division. The opposition the Canadians faced was stronger than that of any other beach save Omaha. That was an accomplishment in which the whole nation could take considerable pride.”
