I have to give trump major kudos for commuting the sentence of Alice Johnson today.
I know it was mostly for PR purposes, but who cares. Great to see her running across that road and hugging her well-wishers, and sorry to say, thanks mr. trump.

(34,460 posts)I think Kardashian deserves more credit for caring about the issue and persuading him to act, and then calling for a more comprehensive solution.

Kim Kardasian West deserves the credit. trump had no idea who she was or how unjust her long imprisonment was.

(1,595 posts)If Trump was being sincere he could have gone through the justice department and commuted the sentences of those already in line. He basically let her jump ahead of the line for show.

(126 posts)Alice Johnson was not some small time drug peddler trying to make ends meet. She played a vital role in a multi-million dollar Columbian cocaine ring, handling hundreds of kilos of coke and millions of dollars. There are thousands of people in this country doing hard time for petty drug charges - and I would applaud their release - but I have a hard time getting too excited about this one. Yes, I think she deserves a second chance and has done her time. A life sentence seems extreme, but what about those who remain imprisoned for far lesser crimes? Do they each need to be assigned a celebrity in order to find justice?
