Star Wars: Mark Hamill Calls Out Kelly Marie Tran's Racists Harassers on Twitter

On Twitter, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill defended Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Kelly Marie Tran and called out those who harassed her online, causing her to delete all of her Instagram posts.

Since the movie’s release, she has been targeted by online bullies who didn’t like the Rian Johnson film or her character Rose Tico. Hamill, however, fired back with some choice words, standing up for someone he has referred to as a “second daughter” in the past. “What’s not to love? #GetALifeNerds,” he wrote, sharing a photo of the duo embracing.

The extent of the harassment has gone as far as some bullies actually making offensive and racist edits to her Wookieepedia page. This also led The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to voice his displeasure over the harassment earlier today.

In a response to a tweet that defended the harassment of Tran, Johnson made it clear these acts were indefensible and any argument for such behavior was nonsense. “Done with this disingenuous bullshit,” the filmmaker tweeted. “You know the difference between not liking a movie and hatefully harassing a woman so bad she has to get off social media. And you know which of those two we’re talking about here.”

And has ruined so many fandoms for me. I've been into "geek" material since I saw Star Wars at 7 years old. D&D, comics, video games, anime, manga. the whole run of it. I've consumed much of it (and work in the field because of it) and have luckily mostly made friends with those that aren't like this to my knowledge.

But this toxic group of individuals, which is in all of those fandoms and more, is simply ruining everything because they consolidate into groups and suck all the oxygen in the room to be about them.

Just like someone we all know.

The sad thing is that we live in a society now where politeness and decency have been thrown out the window, and rude, obnoxious assholes are everywhere. And it's getting worse. I'd be much better off not knowing who these people are, but we have to live with them and they have to live with themselves. We need to confront the bullshit and the bullying when we see. Do not be afraid to hit that alert button when you see harassment and hate speech. Site administrators need to know what is being posted.
