Will Preet Bharara Run for Attorney General? He Just Registered to Vote

New York Times:

Preet Bharara, the former United States attorney in Manhattan who was fired by President Trump, has registered as a Democratic voter in New York for the first time in more than a decade amid speculation that he might run for attorney general.

Mr. Bharara’s registration in Westchester County occurred during the window for candidates to gather signatures to qualify for the Democratic primary in September. A candidate needs thousands of signatures across half the congressional districts by mid-July — meaning time is short for Mr. Bharara to jump in.

Mr. Bharara did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Democratic primary for attorney general is already crowded. It includes Letitia James, the New York City public advocate, who was nominated at the state party convention; Representative Sean Patrick Maloney of the Hudson Valley; Zephyr Teachout, a law professor and former candidate for governor, and Leecia Eve, a former adviser to Hillary Clinton and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

That alone would give me pause. He may be a great choice, but not having been a registered voter for over 10 years? Huh?

2. I believe his principle was that -- as US Attorney -- he should stay out of politics completely.

Mr. Bharara was not a registered voter during his roughly eight years as United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, a period in which he aggressively prosecuted political corruption, indicting the top two lawmakers in Albany, one Democrat and one Republican, and a top aide to Mr. Cuomo.

Records show he was previously a registered voter in Maryland and in New York.

there is also the responsibility of citizens to vote. Being active in a campaign or donating is one thing and a line that should not have been crossed (and apparently was not) but voting? School boards, taxes, bond issues certainly do not cross any line and it is after all a secret ballot system that we use.

who are supposed to remain impartial due to the sensitive nature of their work, do not vote or contribute to the campaigns of any candidate so as not to seem partisan.

But not being registered at all is kinda' weird.

In Texas you can be registered as a voter without having a party affiliation however once you vote in the primary then you are associated with whatever party you vote for.

I am assuming in NY it is a similar thing where you can be a registered voter without a party affiliation and he is just updating his to be a registered democratic voter.

they ask you which one you want to vote in, and put that on the card you stick in the machine. You can change every time you vote if you want to.
